Gillis set the team back big time. The hole he left from his utterly horrendous drafting and ntc's handed out really hurt the club long term. There is a reason he isn't in the league now, it's not because he was an amazing gm either. - anavar
I think that Gillis did what he had to do to try to win a cup. However, his drafting cannot be defended and giving up 2nd rounders for guys like Derek Roy were just bizarre...the way he bungled one of the best goaltending tandems of our generation, the constant trades with Florida. Trading Hodgson for Kassian.....
And people think JB is bad.......

Bennings early work/days are somewhat undesirable
I think he has finally got the hang of how to do things. His signings the last two years is a much better record. All of his signings this year have been better than expected. I really like Roussel (one of my favorite guys) . Beagle was a year too long but he will be a solid shut down guy for four years. I wanted Schaller to sign here last year but he did not live up to expectations.
If you look at the club this year it is a solid NHL team for the first time in many years. The core seems to be close to where we hope.
I think getting rid of Benning and starting over again is pretty dumb. I think we will improve this year and will get better year to year. I think Dim Jim finally learnt . - VANTEL
Awesome! Six years in and we give him a pass because he didn't f*ck up as badly as in the previous years. He has left a trail of awful signings and trades while pissing away draft picks including a 1st round pick this summer. He is a bumbling moron who has got lucky on a couple of draft picks. He has been a disaster and can't get fired soon enough (I'm hoping by January). This 'he's not as bad as he was' forgiveness is pathetic. |

The point is there is more than a dozen teams that have wasted money. Canucks next year without the cap going up or trading any players have 22 mil in space. The team is pretty well in place and they have 15 players committed . The big signings next year are Jake Markstrom and Stecher. Leivo Motte are secondary signings .

id have liked to see what a rebuild from him wouldve looked like. i remember seeing something about how he was going to starting changing over the core - johnnykarate
Ya, reports are he wanted to start a rebuild in 2012 (summer) but Aquilini wouldn’t allow it. I suspect the team would have been in much better shape for Benning had he been able to start a rebuild. No defence for his horrid drafting though. |

I am not a Gillis fan at all. I will leave it at that. - VANTEL
Gillis was a flake which is evident because not one other team or organization has tried to hire such a master tactician, even as the team waterboy.
Benning is two times better than Gillis ever was. |

that 22m doesnt include boeser either. and the bonus money cant be buried was the point i was making. its not impossible just not as rosy as saying we have 22m available for 2-4 guys |

I don't know why fans ( not meant for you) are so worked up about it. Boeser will be signed and Canucks will be Cap Compliant. It is not an option.
Boeser 6.5
Bonuses 3.5 aprrox
Markstrom 4.5
Jake 1.5
Motte 1.0
Leivo 1.5 or traded
Stecher 3.0
That could change but they will figure it out. |

So what happens if they are not cap compliant? Is it forfeiture of games because it is a hard cap?
Is it a fine? It's Aquilini money so I couldn't care less. |

If it ever came down to that and you could buy out Sutter and save 2 mil a year. There are many options of how to deal with things.

Only one buyout per year unless they are going to arbitration with 1 or more players...
Someone correct me if I'm wrong here, I'm a bit sketchy on it but I think thats the gist of it.... |

Gillis did what he needed to do to get the cup run going. Ehrhoff, malholtra, Hamhuis, Torres, Lappiere, Higgins, Samuelsson, Rome, and a few others were all Gillis. But his drafting was poor and the 9-10 NTC's didn't help matters either. But in Gilli's defence it was a trend back then to sign all your guys that got you to the cup finals in hopes of it happening again...which it never did with that roster.
The Flames had 9-10 NTC's after 2004 cup run which handciffed that team for almost a decade. Is what it is. |

Regardless of how they got here, Jim Benning did a great job this summer adding skill, speed and size to the young lineup, gonna be a fun year. |

Old, cynical, grumpy, jaded, fed up, misanthropic, unbelieving, unfriendly, sarcastic, pick one.
I'm just offering a differing outlook, regarding for the pure Benning hatred, but I'm not quite at the chompsey level. All Gm's are good and bad, Benning, Gillis, Burke, Quinn...etc. |
