that was my thought as well but i was corrected - cant buy out ceci.
apparently can only buy out players that are on your roster before last trade deadline - MaximusAurelius
That cant be accurate considering Marleau will be bought out by the canes. |

Which is why marleau was traded to Carolina and bought out on July 1?
Can't buy out ceci because the window has closed and next window doesn't open unless you have a arb case (which the leafs don't have ) |

No way a sheet is happening. Marner wants to a Leaf, this is just negotation bullpoop. He's not gonna sign the prime of his career over to some poop team, and no team is going to give up four firsts for a short term deal. It doesn't make any sense. Marner's not going to sit in a bad situation somewhere on a gutted team while back home his family is watching his old buddy Matthews win the Cup.
I don't think a team is going to offer sheet just to force a match and turn the screws on Toronto's cap either, because then they have MLSE and their financial weight on a vendetta against them for eternity for no reason. - Zezel
I think it ends up being a shorter term deal so he can cash in after new tv deal and expansion raises the cap. |

Is cap friendly buyout calculator wrong then? If you plug in say July 20 as buyout date, returns $750K for this season and next.

I think it's just telling you what the buyout is, not determining if you can or not. |

yes.. you are right.
so unless it is a rule for newly signed contracts (not sure if it was that) then leafs should be able to buy out ceci after all )
(since he himself filed for arbitration) |

i am not sure whether the rule is whether a team had an actual arbitration case, or whether they had a player filing for arb (like ceci). |

No that would be what it is if the leafs had a second buy out window. But they don’t. You only get it if you have someone going to arbitration I believe. |

but there's a date required to get the result and August 31 is the last date you can select.

That's insane. There's no way anyone is dumb enough to give Hainsey $3.5m - Monkeypunk
it was pretty shocking....
but good for Hainsey... he needs to maximize funds at this point in his career... and this way he knows he won't be playing any playoff games.
only risk is Senturds going financially into the toilet during the season... clearly they're running that franchise like a KHL franchise - "Can't pay players salaries"

Aug 31 is probably just the last date for arb |

How does it not make sense? What does "you can buy anyone out" mean to this?
I didn't say that you have to go to arb and only buy that guy out. Going to arb opens second window, then you can buyout anyone. |

According to this, arbitration filing only triggers a buyout window outside the regular buyout period. Have a look
