Even though I'm slandering Mitch on days I'm not loving Mitch, you still like me right aa? - mykokes
My favourite player on the Leafs is Marner... but I find it frustrating that actually playing for a team that could be a contender seems to mean absolutely zero. It is all about squeezing every last cent out of the team, and not giving a poop about what impact that might have on the ability to actual build a championship team.
If he could sign an offer sheet of 14 million and force the Leafs to trade Morgan Rielly to match, he would do it.
How, as a fan, can I get behind that greed.
Marner is not the only player guilty of this, but he is the second in 2 years, and in between that Matthews signed a horrible contract for the team, and it isn't Dubas' fault.
This whole RFA landscape is (frank)ed. Players want to be paid like UFA's NOW, before they have done SFA in the league... and then they want to be able to renegotiate and hold the team over a barrel again in 4 or 5 more years... and what if they STILL have not accomplished anything? We know that won't stop them.

I think he's American born and spent a lot of time playing in the US.
Like all these prospects, they're going to need time in the AHL.
Looking back at Panarin, he scored 60 in the KHL then 20 in the playoffs and he was 23 and then stepped into playing with Kane and the Blackhawks.
Not sure any of the guys Dubas has signed is on that level. They all look like depth guys at best. - JohnFergusonJr
Panarin's story was already documented in full |

I think Duby does not want to sign Mitch to a 5yr deal, that puts all 3 players contracts up at the same time
3, 6 or 8 makes the most sense. and it sounds like Mitchy side does not want long term...so more like 3 years |

The collective barganing agreement runs out on September 15, 2022. Three years from now, there will be an insistence by the owner/management side to have all players off entry level deal be arbitration eligible. This will at least force bargaining in good faith and probably get more reasonable contracts for this category of player.
Teams like Tampa, Jets and Leafs and Chicago who have either drafted well and/or been fortunate enough to draft high and build a strong team are being punished by a combination of the hard cap and the threat of RFA blackmail. Until that new agreement is made, this bullsh!t will continue. |

3 years makes the most sense to me. Keeps the cap hit lower too.
Then sign him to 8 year deal after that. He’ll most likely be a leaf for most of career. |

Owners thought that teams would have much more control over RFAs and would be able to get a few more years of lower costs. Problem is that good/great players are going to push for big numbers whether they are RFA or UFA. All teams (at least all teams with good young players) face this. Well managed teams will be able to assess who is worth it and who isn’t.
Marner is one of the best players in the league and wants to be paid for it. Dubas still has considerable leverage. I don’t have a problem with what either side is trying to get. My only problem is with Ferris leaking stuff to Dreger and buddies.

I hear what’s said in the media. Idk.. I think people are overreacting big time about Paul and Ferris. It’s money, emotions are involved. Fans in Toronto, imo, are starting to prove to be very fragile. The new generation is dying to be cocky, and the Raps gave it to them. Now it’s like “(frank) Mitch, we have an NBA Championship!” Lol..
Anything that happen to an athlete in Toronto gets magnified. Vladdy I think will soak up much of the crazy. - Tanooki
Nah, it's more like "(frank) Mitch, if he truly believes he's worth $3M more than he actually is."
First and foremost, I, and pretty much everyone else, want Marner back on the Leafs. But if he's stuck on getting Matthews $$$, then it's just not gonna happen. Not only is he not worth it, the team literally can't do it. There is a CAP. And trading away players just to overpay him is foolish. |
