I think his numbers stack up well against SS. Malkin outpaced them both but his first 3 yrs were yrs 3-5 post draft as opposed to SS and AM entering the league right away. Tough to compare but I think Matthews side succeeded in arguing that he's closer to Malkin then he was Stamkos. - The Law
SS and AM are mostly scorers and a closer comparable ( again JMO). We'll see if AM scores as much as SS in his career. It will be tough, but it is doable for AM.
Year 4 Stammer scores 60. |

I'm not arguing against MM or his value. I just think some of the "guesses" are way out of whack with anything that's ever been done in the NHL.
Maybe Marner establishes some new norm but it's never happened before. - The Law
Some of the guesses are complete BS.
the best comparable is now Aho and Marner is better than him.
3 milly better?
No
About 1 - .4 milly better I would guess. |

Again, context.
Meier at 6 for only RFA years. He didn't give up any UFA years. 6 was about right.
Labanc is (frank)ed ....not sure why that happened but I think we're all guessing that next summer he'll be given a big (frank)ing kiss by the Sharks.
Aho is NOT team friendly. 8.5 on a 5 yr puts him ahead of Getzlaf and Perry and almost on par with Kane and Toews on their post-ELC deals. - The Law
Omg.....who cares about what Getz, Perry and Toews signed for years and years ago.
Its a different landscape now...they arent comparables. |

Aho is pretty team friendly. A PPG guy for the next 5 years at 8.5 is great in this climate. - AdamFrench
Who's done better on a 5 yr deal?
Toews, Kane, Matthews, STamkos, Crosby and Malkin ...
He got more than Getzlaf and Perry.
The fact that he signed it with another team ...
I think it's a good deal for both sides. I wouldn't call it team friendly though. |

Its exactly how things work.
No agent or team would compare a player today coming off his ELC to a player coming off his ELC 4 - 5 years ago.
Different times.
But believe what want. Its all good. |

You need to do some homework.
Those deals given so long ago are actually what today's players are arguing FOR.
Those deals were the highlight of the NHLPA. The contracts have actually gotten smaller over time (as a percentage of Cap).
This group of RFA's is looking to get back to those better deals. And yes teams and agents reference whatever the contracts that best flatter their clients negotiations. |

They want shorter deals because of what they believe will be more cash in the system coming up soon.
After Seattle joins
New cba
New tv deal.
Once all that occurs, youll probably see a short trend towards longer deals unless the new cba only allows up to 5 years. |
