Players have agents to negotiate with management. I get that.

But if I'm Mitch and my agent and management don't have it done by now,
I do one of two things depending on what I want....

1. If I want the biggest dough possible I let my agent handle all of it.
2. If I want to play for the Leafs, at some point I get involved to just (frank)ing get it done.

Who the (frank) doesn't get involved about their own future?

The 22 year old kind that has a loud-mouthed father with a tiny Richard that keeps telling his son that he is the best player in the NHL and should have the top salary.

He and his dad are involved every step of the way. The idea that he is off playing golf and waterskiing somewhere, and not paying attention to the discussions or anything on social media, is absurd.

The thing is, Pasta's deal was not a steal when eh signed it. It's all about how they perform after. Same with Kadri and Rielly's deals. No one thought they were steals the day they signed it.

It was a pretty good deal when it was signed

"Contacting Aho's agent" is flawed.

Marner's camp has numbers they are looking for, short term or long term.

A team making an offersheet has to come in at one of those terms/dollars, AND they have to be beating the Leafs offers at those terms/dollars, by enough that the Leafs won't match.

I doubt any team is paying big bucks for short term and giving up huge compensation. Is anyone really paying him McDavid money?

Marner is not signing something under 10.6 ... because he can get that from the Leafs anyway. Then they have to give up compensation. Which is why we keep coming back to 10.5

I am betting Marner signs for 4 years 10.5.

- Aetherial

That's awful salary for only 4 years.

I have no problem with 4 years but it should be sub $9M if it is. Probably closer to $8M.

This part is flawed ....ruins the rest of your points.
- The Law

respectfully disagree.

just point of view....

all the "stats" and "comparables" suggest Marner should be getting 8.5 - 9.5... its just the Toronto market (and the bs coming from Dreger, Lebrun, etc for months) that driver the price into the stratosphere.

clearly to date no one thinks Marner is worth 10.5 and 4 1sts.
clearly no one thinks Point or Rantannen are worth 10.5 and 4 1sts either.

Aho got what 8.5... so therefore simply logic says those guys will all fall between 8.5 - 10.5 based on length of term.

If I'm Dubas ... 9.5 x 6 years... big bonus money in the year one IF he signs prior to camp. The one mistake (in my opinion) that Dubas made with Nylander was to essentially pay him back for holding out.

Dubas does that again with Marner he's an idiot.

I don't think so. I think Aho's numbers and the precedent over the years shows where the real meat of the battle is. He wants a 4 or 5 yr deal and his comps put him around 9 milly per season. Is there a team that will overpay (10.5) and take the risk that he walks after 4 years? Maybe I'm naive but I don't see a team willing to do that.

My best guess is they are probably close enough but battling about those tough finer details. Marner wanting 5 x 9.5ish ..........Leafs wanting a 6th year at that number or 5 x 9.

That last push almost always needs a deadline for one of the sides to capitulate.

I'm on the same page about the numbers. 6 x 9.5 has been my guess all along. I'm just saying that can't happen after October 1 so Dubas needs to set that deadline and be prepared to act (make a trade). So telling Ferris you've got to July 31 after which time I'll be working the phone to gauge interest makes lots of sense to me.

It's a great topic. Who's his best "first 3 years in the league" comparison?

Getzlaf, Toews, Stamkos, Malkin, Crosby ?

I love the guy, scored a ton, still 65 points behind #1 though ( I realize he missed some games )

My opinion is he got 8 yr money and a 5 year term and it will be even more crushing if he walks after 5.
