The reality is Leafs don't want him to sign now. They want Rantanen and/or Point signed first. - RogerRoeper
Point will be next imo |

AM and JT signed deals worth about 27% of the Cap.
Sid and Gino signed deals worth about 31% of the Cap ...then won 3 Cups. - The Law

Doesn't matter now. EK just said that the Leafs set a deadline for the end of July. - GreatGigInTheSky
Not to give any credence to EK ...but,
If you're Dubas and you know you can't sign MM too late into the season (cap reasons) you've got to set a deadline.
I would have given the negotiations a July 1 deadline and told Ferris that after July 1 I'd be on the phone gauging interest in MM while still working with them on a new deal. If no deal is made by July 31 and an acceptable trade is on the table ....I'll have to press go. |

The thing is, Pasta's deal was not a steal when eh signed it. It's all about how they perform after. Same with Kadri and Rielly's deals. No one thought they were steals the day they signed it. |

absolutely no rush to do anything on Dubas' part at this point. Aho actually received and offer sheet, which pretty clearly his Agent sought out from Montreal (nice move btw).... Montreal helped Aho out by getting him the $$ he wanted and term.
so far, none of Dreger's slew of offer sheets for Marner have materialized... meaning that no one is willing to pay north of 10.5( or whatever the 4 1st threshold is) for Marner.
Dubas is now in the driver seat. He cleared CAP to sign Marner, made it clear that he would match up the 4 1st threshold...
He (Dubas) doesn't need to do anything right now. Pretty obvious that Marner's agent would have sought out offer sheets if they were to be had.
All Dubas has to do now is put an offer on the table 6 years (or more) 9.5 (kucherov money) with a term that ends past Matthews contract. Sign it before camp - or don't come to camp. The fall back then is a Nylander style contract signed late November which lowers the longer term CAP hit.
Unless an offer sheet emerges - between 9.5 and 10.5 - in the next 6 - 7 weeks - nothing for Dubas to do.
Marner on the other hand, should be contacting Aho's agent. |

Aside from Krejci (and Backes/Moore obvs), they have fantastic deals for the most part. Chara at 2mil when they trott that caveman out for 25 minutes a night still is filthy. Bergeron/Marchand/Pasta all "underpaid" |

Dubas is the only one dealing with a "can't sign him in the season" deadline. So if you know you need him signed or moved by early October then you need time to work out a deal.

Players have agents to negotiate with management. I get that.
But if I'm Mitch and my agent and management don't have it done by now,
I do one of two things depending on what I want....
1. If I want the biggest dough possible I let my agent handle all of it.
2. If I want to play for the Leafs, at some point I get involved to just (frank)ing get it done.
Who the (frank) doesn't get involved about their own future?

What if they don't sign by Sept 1, Sept 15, Oct 1st?
Dubas isn't under pressure to do anything but he should be prepared to make a trade if needed. And according to the Capologists signing MM after October 1 makes for some tricky (maybe impossible) cap issues in yr 1.
My only point is that it would make sense for Dubas to put a deadline on MM after which he'd start sniffing around for offers. |

"Contacting Aho's agent" is flawed.
Marner's camp has numbers they are looking for, short term or long term.
A team making an offersheet has to come in at one of those terms/dollars, AND they have to be beating the Leafs offers at those terms/dollars, by enough that the Leafs won't match.
I doubt any team is paying big bucks for short term and giving up huge compensation. Is anyone really paying him McDavid money?
Marner is not signing something under 10.6 ... because he can get that from the Leafs anyway. Which is why we keep coming back to 10.5
I am betting Marner signs for 4 years 10.5. |
