You do realize that Marner is heading down the same path you oh so hate Nylander for?
He could very well not have a contract up until Dec 1st and could very well have a very poop year because of it. - Santo_44
No not yet.
A) its only july.....and no other rfa has signed except one.
B) just because willie joined the team out of shape and had a crap year doesnt mean marner or any other rfa will.
C) if come marner misses the 1st game of the season cause he has no contract....then we can say hes doing what willie did.

I don't think a deal with Marner can happen that deep into the season. Blows up the yr 1 cap hit too much we were told. If true, then both sides know the real deadline is October 1'ish. |

dont think that can happen this time, the Leafs had the cap space to do that last year (10+ cap hit for Willie)
so I assume it would be the same, except much higher cap hit for Marner if he signed for 10+ in November - senstroll

So you're getting mad at info dreger is providing?
Lol
Really?
Its dreger....we know hes full of sh!t.
At least i thought we all knew - Fakepartofme
Mad? Not even remotely. Disappointed, if anything.
Just pointing out that the Muppet has 2 sources of info. Nonnis and Ferris. The first is family and Ferris is just using him to try and help himself.
I fully believe that Marner will be a Leaf for years to come. But that doesn't stop me for accepting that the way his camp is going about this is trash, and much worse than what Nylander's camp did. And they got absolutely roasted for it. |

And NYlander's side didn't leak everything to Darren Dreger. - RogerRoeper
We dont know marners had either.
Besides, everyone was reporting what apparently willie wanted. So either it was bs or info leaked to everyone |

Yup. Though if they have guys on LTIR they might be able to squeeze it. |

I'm not sure that, other than the questionable "reports" we hear out of the media, I understand what has either Willie or Itchy have done that's any different from any normal contract negotiation.

(frank) b!tch marner🤦♂️
what good is a hundered point player who disappears in the playoffs?🤦♂️
him and his daddy can take greedy willi and go play in cardiff i don’t give a toss🤦♂️
this greedy millennial me first culture has got to change or there never gonna win jack poope🤦♂️ - Skalapy
Has nothing to do with JT & AM going to the bank & peanuts left over for the D?
Do they deserve those contracts? Hard to argue against it other than the cap is finite & did they expect that has no influence on building a team. They’ve set a precedence no other non cup winner has done.
I’m not saying it cannot be overcome but it certainly makes it very difficult. |

I'm not a scared about the 3 guys coming free at the same time. Leafs would have tonnes of cap space and the flexibility to do whatever they wanted.
I think Marner gets his 5 yrs or buckles and gives the Leafs a 6th year. 5 x 9'ish or 6 x 9.5. I think the 3 yr is still low on either's list and the 7/8 is likely out of reach bc they don't see eye-to-eye on the value of those UFA years. - The Law
Well these deals are getting harder to get done it seems, so having to deal with 3 at one time..doesnt seem smart
I like 3 x 7.5 to make the cap sit better to add another D at some point

I am sure the nerds have covered every angle like that to know well ahead what is possible with the cap.

AM and JT signed deals worth about 27% of the Cap.
Sid and Gino signed deals worth about 31% of the Cap ...then won 3 Cups. |

On my blog & this one i did learn something obscure about the offseason LTIR rules. No details so i found my own.
A medical report stating a player will miss a min 10 games or 24 days of the season can go on LTIR early before day 1 & not count against the cap. |

3 would be good for the team for now but if you can get MM to add a couple of years at reasonable dollars you gotta do it I think. The risk is that after 3 yrs he's looking at almost entirely UFA years so yr 4 and 5 would be 12+.
I think these deals are tough because of the leverage teams have. After 5 yrs there's no leverage. The players are going to get whatever the market thinks they are worth. Longer is generally better for the team but most players (agents/NHLPA) seem to moving away from the comfort of term when they're young.
