Sportsnet is tanking and will forfeit the Canadian NHL rights to TSN by 2020.

Sry no link, random stuff on Twatter. They just let go of Bob McClown and the Cherry thing are apparently just the start of the cuts.

They can't afford to sign all their on-air personalities, so they are folding. It is inevitable, just like the Leafs.

In general I don't like Cherry's take.
However, I think CBC's hockey night in Canada will be less entertaining without him - even if the person(s) replacing him would be better. (I vote for Burkie! )

It's like Boston Bruins pre-game ceremonies post-René Rancourt.. (although the kingpin guy is kind of a good replacement).

They should give Cherry a proper farewell season. Like him or not he’s a (frank)ing legend. But who knows, Sportsnet is amateur hour wearing clown shoes imo.

Edit: I’m happy that creepy old rum nose is done in Boston.

How in the ever-loving frank is Don Cherry not in the Hockey Hall of Fame as a broadcaster?

Like, seriously, how in the ever-loving frank?

Here's the list:

https://www.hhof.com/html/leg_broadcasters.shtml

I look at some of the names of the past 15 years or so:

John Davidson
Mike Emrick
Pat Foley
Rick Jeanneret
Peter Maher
Nick Nickson
Sam Rosen
Dave Strader

I don't want to get into a poop fight here - I won't put down any of these guys (although Rick Jeanneret?!?!? Really!??!?).

But you have to be smoking crack cocaine every day to think that any one of these guys has had a greater impact on hockey broadcasting than Don Cherry.

It's franking shameful.

Cherry hasn't had a disease or some other scenario to make him worthy.

I just keep reading it on Twitter and on radio. It does make sense, as they are clearly cutting costs. When it was signed years ago I did not read a single person saying it was a good deal for Rogers. It's just too much $.

It probably makes sense as a defensive strategy.

DAZN has snapped up the NFL package and now EPL.

Rogers and Bell need live sports to ensure that old farts like me don't cut the cable.

Probably a matter of "it will cost us more to not do this than it will to do this."

Maybe.

It's almost too good though. A lot of people think it looks fishy and NHLPA can't be happy.

I question if because he was such a late round pick, did he get bad representation?

Those are the types of contracts that get you past the first round.

Wonder if that failed TV deal will affect the Jays payroll? I hope MLSE buys the Jays. Vladdy gotta eat.

I think it's a deal predicated on him getting a big pay increase next year when they have 20mil and he probably (hopefully in his case) has another 50 point year. It also takes him to his last RFA year, so he could control his destination a year early if he wanted. Take an arb deal for one year next season and become an UFA at 25.

I wonder if Bell and Tanenbaum would want to get involved.

Although I would imagine there could be synergies with owning it all under one umbrella.

Force corporations with Raptors and Leafs boxes to also purchase Skydome boxes.

On a related note, I can't believe we are taking about possibly scrapping the Skydome.

The one fantastic thing about Skydome is location, maybe the best in MLB. It'll be tough to beat. But 30 years is old now for a stadium.

Rogers won't get a dime of public funding though. They got the Skydone for a ridiculously cheap price.
