This is Deja Vu all over again.
You too will be called a hater.

Just bow, and repeat,
Risto with 42 pts and -43 is a defensive machine.

- IonSabres

Perfectly illustrates how dumb coaches are. "He's big and tuff so he must be a defensive defenseman."

I don't blame Risto for coaches having no idea what to do with him

The facts: Risto was on the ice for 59 sabres even strength goals last year. For comparison, Zach Bogosian, hardly an offensive machine, was on ice for 53 Sabres goals but in over 500 less minutes. That means you are way more likely to score with Bogosian on the ice than Risto. The much hated Scandella? 36 sabres goals in only 63 games. Again, you score more with freaking Scandella on the ice than Risto.

Out of curiosity, Dahlin? a whopping 67 Sabres goals, again in way less ice time

- matty12345

Gee , any chance risto played agaisnt top competition?

That affected his goals agaisnt on the ice.

Maybe being overplayed ?

How did Jake mccabe do?

Careful.
I said this a week ago exactly and was crucified as being a whiner and a bad fan.

I’m a fan and probably overly optimistic about it.

You’re an insufferable knowitall douche.

I don't claim to have inside information. I just mean, he is awful. I watch him and can see it with the naked eye. If you take away all the upside and potential of being better, we have been watching a really bad defenseman the last few years. And if the eye test says that, the stats say he is even worse.

We all know it. That's why everyone in Buffalo wants him gone (most everyone). I have a hard time believing GM's don't know it. Their players target him when he is on the ice to force bade turnovers. They have to all know he sucks. And even if a few are dumb enough to want him, they know the other twenty something GM's don't. So they aren't going to offer something good.

Like, in what world is the defenseman who leads the league in Minus, can't pass out of his own end, and has terrible possession numbers going to get you a 50 point forward?

- matty12345

Because he's a 40-50pt RH Dman with Snarl who can skate!

*on the PP.

*which he's being demoted from

He scored 26 points EV. He is what we all know he is. He's fantastic on the PP, and pretty weak 5v5. When Dahlin replaces him full time, his value will fall. OR. He will be utilized correctly and balance his lack of pp points for more EV points. This will fully depend on his linemates, deployment, and minutes.

- TheSabresTaco

Coach taco, why are you demoting risto from the #1pp?

What are tommorow's lottery numbers?

Thank you in advance

This does not mean that. The most likely case is Bogosian was on the ice with Skinner and Eichel.

Most "advanced" stats are not individual indicators, they are a better indication for how well the team is playing.

Hockey is not a great sport to use advanced stats for since it is a free flowing sport. It is much harder to have direct comparisons. Football and baseball are great for advanced stats since you can literally much up play by play.

- Mentalorgasm5

Your logic is flawed. We sign a 20 goal scorer, everyone says "sweet, a 20 goal scorer" not, "well based on the team he played with, it's impossible to predict his new stats".

A proven 20 goal scorer will score 20 goals on any team. A bad defensemen isn't bad because the whole organization conspired against him to stick him in bad situations or make him play sidney crosby every weekend. For example, risto took 47% of his draws in the offensive zone, but people here will tell you he has to play defense, in his own end, against the top line of every team, every single shift. But it is just an excuse made up to defend him, it isn't true.

Come on guys, we went through this with Myers, who was way better than Risto when it comes to statistics, and he was what? A 4th or 5th defensemen on another team? He didn't get better when put in a better team with a better situation, he just got relied on less and trusted less. Risto will go become some other team's 4th or 5th defenseman, and make 5 million a year. It isn't value. Hence, he is still here. :p

No, he should get 60-65% o zone starts because he's an offensive defenseman

he
is
an
offensive
defenseman

Something which Teddy, Disco and Housley either couldn't comprehend or refused to believe

I have a feeling that most coaches in the league feel that way about him. Whether that's his scouting report coming into the draft, his size, his "snarl", or what have you, the reputation has been hard to shed, regardless of what the stats say.

It's fine to say this, but who on those teams is picking up tough dzone starts and minutes to compensate? In my book, I'm maximizing Dahlin's usage over everyone else.

No one. He's it, unless you want McCabe and Bogo to do it. Risto should be traded, anyway, imo, so we can hopefully assemble a better 2nd line. I can see the crying from Sabres fans coming a mile away when he's put in a more advantageous position on another team though

I can't fathom a world where people think he is an offensive defenseman. He is awful with breakout passes and he is not a driver of play in the offensive zone. How often do you say to yourself "look at that pass Risto made for the goal"? There is a reason that they got him off pp1 in favor of Dahlin - Dahlin is a driver of play.

Let someone else pay $5.4m for a 3rd pairing D who needs to play 4 of 18 minutes on the PP and get 65% OZ starts.

the only way they move risto, is a massive over payment

risto, miller and montour all on cheap deals

he's not giving risto away because half the fans on hockeybuzz want him gone

- homiedclown

Good post

Risto's size and strength lure coaches into making him a defensive defenseman.

He is a point getter

I think we see 55 if he's on the roster.

He is one if the best pp defenseman in the league.

Lousley should have used 53 more on the pp and ot
