I'll applaud him if I'm at that game. Unfortunately I think Lenher will be pissed and probably shut out the Isles. - JimmyP
He may be pissed at Lou and Isles' management, but he won't be pissed at the fans. He's smart enough to know the difference. I think he will appreciate the fans, as they show their appreciation for him. |

I actually tried to wade through some of that Forbes article you posted, but I did not scrutinize it enough to reach the conclusion you did. I just remember reading at the time that the Islanders offered him roughly the same dollars per season that the Leafs offered ($11 MM), but over 8 years, not 7. - JohnScammo
The bonus portion of the contract getting taxed at a much less rate than ordinary income in U.S. (37% over 500k.) was a big difference. He made a lot more signing in Toronto. He makes more on the bonus he already got paid alone than he would have made on the 8 year Isles contract. Then he would still get the salary of 1 mill a year, whatever he gets for that 8th year after this contract is done, whatever he makes on the Money he now already has in the bank from bonus, .. and obviously he is making $ doing commercials and sht in Canada. |

He's correct, the bonus money gets taxed at an insanely-lower rate in Canada than regular income does. He/the article is also correct about it being lockout-proof. He gets all his money, basically, up front and if/when a lockout occurs then he only loses minimal salary.
Look at his actual base salary vs. the signing bonus money every year

I also think I saw in that article that Toronto even had an advantage over Tampa, tax-wise, despite the fact the Florida has no income tax. I wonder if Stamkos realized this when he re-upped with Tampa?
OK, now I think we Islander fans owe Tavares a big apology for lobbing snakes at him. Can we hold an appreciation day for him? |

Also not true.. sorry to pick on you. According to the Forbes article I posted earlier he ended up getting about $20 mill more over the legnth of the contract b/c of the Bonus $ tax rate in Canada. It's only taxed at 15 ish % which is why that contract was all up front Bonus $ and then basically league minimum for 7 years.. ish. It also protects PJ boy from lock out. - niteislander
The one thing about that is, the 15% applies to Matthews, as he is a U.S citizen and resides in Arizona. I wonder if it did to Tavares since he was Canadian?
Leafs signing bonuses are very underrated. It's actually a bigger deal than Floirda's taxes always talked about.

I love how most of these morons keep referring to the retail village as a "mega-mall". It's 315k sq ft and Roosevelt Field is 2M sq ft |

Or bring them into the arena and train them to sting Josh Bailey and Andrew Ladd when they glide around the ice. |
