I know it was sooooo terrible that an "Appreciation Day" was needed to lift up his spirits
But maybe you're right, the NY fanbase should have just threatened him, his wife and family, yeah def better off, oh btw its almost nap time, u getting ready?? - Hell_Bent
It's funny I saw Leaf fans ripped for that more than Islander fans for what they did to Tavares |

Which if true might mean he might really wants out of Toronto. If not why wouldn't he agree to a 7 year deal? only way that makes sens is he is worried Toronto matches it and then he is stuck as second fiddle to Matthews/JT. I can't think of another reason for him to want only 3 years if you are talking about that much money. Does he think the cap is going to go up that much more? .. just curious why everyone thinks he would ask for that short of term. - niteislander
It's actually really simple he wants to get keep getting paid.
Marner is 22 so a 7 year deal at 11 = 77 mill ends when he is 29
But 3 year deal at 12 mill (36mil)ends at 25 then he can get 7 years at what ever the salary is up to for star players..maybe in 2023-2024 15 mill for him wont be out of the question due to the salary cap going up
he becomes a UFA at 25-26 he can cash in on again at 15 mil a year for 7 =105 mill and hes still is a ufa again at 32-33 years old
Its smart for him, look at guys like Crosby and ovi who's contracts dont seem big anymore with the cap going up. Hes just betting on himself. If he has a few bad years it backfires completely

Oh boy
One day, try to think without the Leafs saltiness, and then post about something. - Aetherial
What saltiness? I have no feelings towards the leafs whatsoever. When you sign an offersheet, you sign knowing you are possibly leaving. Is that really different from someone who walks away? Raptors example is different because the won a championship. If Marner signs and leaves via offersheet, leaf fans will be upset. It will be just like Tavares leaving |

Oh they already have started saying match Marner offer sheet then trade is butt off after, so dont let them try to deny anything, they seem to forget what most say

The fact that Lou hasn't ponied up this asking price yet with a big gaping hole at LW is a bit concerning, if this is true:

If it were that cheap and that easy why hasn't any team traded for him yet?
I think the athletic has creditable sources, but I think who ever is giving the source info is wrong.
Or his rfa contract demands are insane |

There are reports that he's looking for about $3.5M-$4M AAV on a two year deal. So something in the neighborhood of 2 years, $7M-$8M dollars
My guess as to why no one has acquired him yet: GM's want him to commit to more term. Purely my own speculation though.
If that contract ask is legitimate, it's more than fair for a guy who was arguably the best player in the world not playing in the NHL |

Basketball is a different sport. 1 star can't win it all in NHL.
The difference is, Toronto fans won't be idiots and throw things at Leonard when he returns and call him names. - RogerRoeper
mainly b/c he won you the championship your city hasn't seen since the 90's in baseball. ... and some will still boo the guy. |

I don't really disagree with you, but the reality is that they have to do something. They can't go into the season with the same roster and expect better results. Beauvillier can't yet be relied upon to be the regular 2LW. They have to do something. Giving up a 2nd an a low-level prospect shouldn't be an overly-big risk given what Gusev could be. |

That was disgraceful what happened with Tavares. Yes, I am going there. Nerds behind a keyboard are different than actually throing things at a guy. - RogerRoeper
YOu have the most classless fan base on the planet. You make Eagles' fans look good.... We booed Tavares. You threatened to kill players and their wives. STFU and go to your own boards you troll. |

Not really. They could be looking at this a throw away year once they missed out on Panarin. Maybe they wait for Belmont and for some help to come up from Bridgeport. |

You know he's listed as 5'9" and 154 lbs., right? He may be able to pile up some points in the KHL, but I question whether his size wouldn't hinder him in the NHL.

Well then they'd have the ability to trade him before the 2nd year runs out. If he is "that good" then they'll surely recoup more than they paid for him. It's a no brainer, to me, if they aren't stupid and keep him around until July 1st only to lose him for nothing. |
