Who did they pick that was poor? Yak was ranked #1 by everyone and Murray has been a flop as well, just poopty luck they got number one in a very weak draft year. Like I said, 95% of the time all the top five kids play are good. - Pacificgem
Murray's been hurt, Yak doesn't have that excuse. Their scouting has long been the joke of the league. |

Thats pretty subjective.
I'd be more tolerant of the criticisms if it wasn't a constant pile on. He's done more than a "few good things". The constant dumb luck argument for his successes is also nauseating.
He's still the GM and I suspect that he'll be the GM for the next few years, so learn to live with it or just don't comment. It's really sad and pathetic that a supposed fan, can't even support the team that he supposedly supports.... - chompsey
I support my country and truly want to see the the country and the PM succeed but he fact is he is an idiot. I however have no time to complain about his ineptitude all day long. So yeah I get it. |

He finished 2nd, 3rd and 6th last while spending like a drunken sailor while trying to be competitive.
I don’t think there’s been any “dumb luck”, his drafting has been ok, but as I said, the top five kids in the entire world are usually all pretty good hockey players, just different levels of good. Just because Pettersson is a much better player at #5 than say Patrick was at #2 doesn’t mean Patrick isn’t a good hockey player, he most certainly is, just not Pettersson good.
Now Benning picking Boeser at #23 was a stroke of genius on his part. He identified Boeser’s ability to shoot the puck and he picked him. Great on Benning!! - Pacificgem
Please elaborate......Eriksson was spending like a drunken sailor?
Sure he brought in FA's to supplement the team but they were all small contracts with the exception of LE, Beagle and now Myers.
I'd hardly call that spending like a drunken sailor. It's unfortunate that LE didn't pan out. You win some, you lose some. Half of you guys wouldve complained if he didn't do anything at all..... |

The point still stands, most top five kids are hard to screw up, however that doesn’t mean it never happens. |

It doesn’t matter, you’re ignoring the fact he was trying to be competitive and failed miserably you (frank)in sheep. |

But it does matter - your statement was that he spent like a drunken sailor as an indictment on his ability to GM.
I don't think anyone here would accuse ol' chomps of being a sheep. Just dumbasses like yourself when you can't back your absurd proclamations.
I support JB, wrinkles and all. He's done a lot of work to improve the team. Definitely been missteps along the way, but at least he didn't stand still. He took chances. Many backfired. Its all irrelevant as he's still the GM whether we like it or not, so deal..... |

The ‘spending like a drunken sailor’ was just for dramatic effect, you’re obviously too dumb to see the actual point. He was trying to be competitive and he finished 2nd, 3rd and 6th last, thus I think he’s been a failure, as a general statement, over the past five years. |

What’s with the cap circumventing on the Lebanc contract? If the league doesn’t investigate, it’s a joke. |

I don't hate Benning and I don't have any suggestions on who could have done a better job placed in exactly the same circumstances. He deserves some credit but there are also areas that need improvement.
- The draft picks he's made have generally exceeded expectations
- He convinced some older guys with NTC's to leave. (Unless that was Linden's doing.)
- His ability to identify free agents and trade targets that will actually improve the team has been terrible.
- His negotiation skills in executing trades with other GM's has been bad.
- His negotiation skills in signing free agents has been bad.
- He has overpaid on virtually every contract extension signed.
- He has parted with too many draft picks to acquire marginal players in exchange
- He has failed to gain additional higher round draft picks that could produce a more skilled prospect pool.
- He has yet to establish a clear team style or identity that they are working towards. Players he's acquired seem to be a motley collection of bargain bin oddities. They're not big & aggressive, they're not fast, they're not highly skilled, they're just...available.
Benning's done a few things well but I believe his overall performance is sub-standard. Not having an experienced senior executive above him has been a huge mistake that falls squarely on the shoulders of ownership. |

Didn't the NHLPA get all pissy with Kesler for making comments about taking team friendly deals? |

Tired of the JB sucks narrative. So tired of it. It's gotten juvenile. I'm sure the haters base most of their hate depending on the color of the month he gets from Hairclub....
Pat Quinn was easily my most favorite GM and he didn't draft too bad either - hello Pavel! But he also had his flaws.......imagine if Gretzky DID sign instead of Messier.... - chompsey
JB sucks.

Its ignorant mutha(frank)in comments like this that absolutely get in my craw.
Squandered picks? Are you (frank)in serious? What a (frank)in dick mitten. Name ONE GM that HASN'T "squandered" picks. Trading picks are a part of doing business. You'd cry if he didnt use picks to acquire someone.
You cant be (frank)in real.
Maybe someone can find it for me, its on my phone. BUT, there is a chart out there that summarizes draft efficiency between 2014-17. Vancouver had the 3rd highest amount of GP from players drafted in rounds 3-7. Please tell me how that is squandering?
Quit being a piss ant.... - chompsey

“Ever” is a long time, the pool was pretty deep back in the mid 80’s to early 90’s (84-92). There were a lot of great kids drafted early in the draft like Linden 2nd, Daigneault 10th, Sandlak 4th, Nedved 2nd and some great 2nd round + picks like Mike Peca & Slegr as well as some guy named Bure.
That doesn’t even take into account the guys who flopped, at the time guys like Woodley 7th OA 1986 and Herter 8th OA 1989 were highly touted kids.
Sure you can look back now and judge, but like I said, at the time, the Canucks had a nice pool of kids.
Nedved ended up being the key to acquiring Jeff Brown, Bret Hedican and Nathan LaFayette. Sandlak for Murray Craven. - Pacificgem
We the fans adored Nedved the Seattle T-Bird so much we passed on Jagr...oops |
