He's not the only mistake, but he's the most crippling. I'm not going to praise his drafting when i don't think his record is all that impressive once you consider the squandered picks.
It's a really big year for Benning, this is year 6. Considering how he's traded more future draft capital and tied up more future cap space he'd damn well better make the playoffs by the next 2 seasons, this year with a healthy roster.
I don't want people to be so blinded by the top 7 drafting nearly every year and say we have to keep him because of his picks. - golfingsince
Its ignorant mutha(frank)in comments like this that absolutely get in my craw.
Squandered picks? Are you (frank)in serious? What a (frank)in d ick mitten. Name ONE GM that HASN'T "squandered" picks. Trading picks are a part of doing business. You'd cry if he didnt use picks to acquire someone.
You cant be (frank)in real.
Maybe someone can find it for me, its on my phone. BUT, there is a chart out there that summarizes draft efficiency between 2014-17. Vancouver had the 3rd highest amount of GP from players drafted in rounds 3-7. Please tell me how that is squandering?

You really aren't very good with the CBA and cap things are you.
Jim Benning, I would like to add to the top 6 but can't because of cap restraints.
Nighthawk, we can fit everyone under the cap no matter what. - manvanfan

You’re all riled up!
Answer me this, does another GMs incompetence make you feel better about Bennings incompetence? Like, that guys stupid too, so our guy isn’t soooo bad... |

We don’t have a cap issue, but man, look at that team. You think they’re so great but look at their cap, it’s way worse than ours. |

I don’t care who those teams are but I bet they tried to lowball him to stay under 10.3million. Also maybe he is loyal and doesn’t want to leave Toronto? |

Nah, the point is to stop (frank)in micro-analyzing everything he does. Every GM has done some stupid (frank)in poop that nearly every fan base complains about their GM.
I just can't say with a straight face that another GM would have us in a better position. Make better trades? Probably. Draft as well? definitely not.

Listen, we get it, JB has made mistakes. I'm over it. If they think the grass is greener, guess again.
I'd love for these asswipes to name ONE Canuck GM that they actually liked......and why... |

Chomps, you are fired up this morning!
I like Benning for his drafting and Quinn for his trading. Too bad we couldn’t morph them into one. |

Tired of the JB sucks narrative. So tired of it. It's gotten juvenile. I'm sure the haters base most of their hate depending on the color of the month he gets from Hairclub....
Pat Quinn was easily my most favorite GM and he didn't draft too bad either - hello Pavel! But he also had his flaws.......imagine if Gretzky DID sign instead of Messier.... |

I think we’re all going to love JTM when we see him with either EP or BH.
In 2 years, we’ll have a contending team IMO. We have good pieces coming up, or core guys will be mid 20s, the old balls will be gone.
Anyone wanna take a bet we make the playoffs this year? I think it’s worth it if we do. Give the boys a taste!

In Benning’s totality his poor side far outweighs his good side, but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t done a few good things. Drafting top five is pretty much fool proof, but that doesn’t mean there’s the odd (frank)up. |

Thats pretty subjective.
I'd be more tolerant of the criticisms if it wasn't a constant pile on. He's done more than a "few good things". The constant dumb luck argument for his successes is also nauseating.
He's still the GM and I suspect that he'll be the GM for the next few years, so learn to live with it or just don't comment. It's really sad and pathetic that a supposed fan, can't even support the team that he supposedly supports.... |

He finished 2nd, 3rd and 6th last while spending like a drunken sailor trying to be competitive.
I don’t think there’s been any “dumb luck”, his drafting has been ok, but as I said, the top five kids in the entire world are usually all pretty good hockey players, just different levels of good. Just because Pettersson is a much better player at #5 than say Patrick was at #2 doesn’t mean Patrick isn’t a good hockey player, he most certainly is, just not Pettersson good.
Now Benning picking Boeser at #23 was a stroke of genius on his part. He identified Boeser’s ability to shoot the puck and he picked him. Great on Benning!! |

Who did they pick that was poor? Yak was ranked #1 by everyone and Murray has been a flop as well, just poopty luck they got number one in a very weak draft year. Like I said, 95% of the time all the top five kids play are good. |
