So I am to believe that Kessel would just walk away from them during practice and do whatever he wanted? I heard they didn't like his attitude during film sessions. He also stopped every day to get a hot dog at a cart near his apartment...
- burgh4life87

Kessel hates film sessions. Tocchet even mentions this on the newest spittin chiclets episode. In listening to Tocchet it’s clear he understands needing to approach people differently which makes sense because he played under the master of this in Scotty Bowman.

“I just do what I kind of do. I don’t necessarily change my game ever,” Kessel said. “I just go out there and play my game, and hopefully I can produce points and score goals and help the team win. That’s basically it. I don’t think I really need to change for anything and just keep on doing my thing, I guess.”

How exactly do you manage an attitude like that. Guy forced a trade to Arizona because the coach treats him like a buddy.

Yup, We got the best out of Kessel. Max value - 2 cups. And we pretty much got back what we gave up for him. A 50 point player and a 1st round pick

He came in humble, Produced and we moved him when the attitude became untenable

A good trade in, and a good trade out

And Tocchets shown a tremendous amount of success in this approach as a head coach....

It's easy to be buddies with players as an assistant that coaches the Power Play, when the buck for the entire team doesn't stop with you

Why would you need to change his game? You adjust your usage and systems around him because he’s a ppg player.
- Feds91Stammer

Can you guarantee me he's a PPG player next year, cause he sure looked like he was slowing down to me in the second half.

Also, you saying Sullivan didn't try talking to him as a person is more speculative then believing Rossi's tell-all article.

Anyways, I'm pretty over this. At the end the of the day we can all speculate but none of us were in the room. We're all going to believe what we want and no one's gonna change anyone's mind.

Very true, unfortunately I bet it comes up all year.

Why would I believe anything from Rossi?

No I can’t guarantee that but maybe the relationship with Sully impacted his performance more than anything.

I agree with you, Tojo. It sounded to me like he was done in our top 6. If his PP production dipped here to 40 and ES he put up 30 I don’t think that would’ve been a failure by any means but a dip nonetheless. I’m anticipating a 35ES/35PPP season for Phil with Stepan and Keller.

I also have to agree with Vic - it’s pointless bringing this up again and again. To me this isn’t the same as trading Cole. When we traded Cole we created a hole (sorry for rhyming) and we didn’t fill it properly. I don’t think we’re doing that with Phil. I think we’re better today than we were 10/1 of last year

When I worked for a defense firm I did a lot of trial work, including managing the ediscovery and exhibits. When you have 2 to 4 attorneys, all different age, gender, thought process different, and you are trying to manage a single approach to the trial, poop hits the fan quick if you alienate ideas. Unless you take the time to understand the team you are working with and how they fit together, you will be running in circles for weeks.

They knew the reason why. Same reason 3 other teams decided best to just trade Kessel. It’s not complex. Cut off the finger to save the hand.

Galchenyuk is on his 3rd team in half the amount of time as Kessel, why the hell do we want someone like that?

I don't see why he has to change his game considering that's what got him to the show and got him the paycheck he's making. Why would he change? Adam Oates tried to change Ovi and Ovi was dogpoop that year.

I think if you look at players of Galchenyuk’s caliber it is probably more common for them to switch teams than a proven goal scorer. Kessel is a proven goal scorer yet teams always walk away from him. That is the point I’m making. However I also think Kessel forced their hand. “I don’t want to play 3rd line”. When the 1 and 2 center are all world talents that don’t want to play with him what are you to do?

I like Sullivan and I certainly appreciate his contributions to the cup teams. I don't think he's been great the last two seasons. Running Cole out of town was dumb. I somewhat understand wanting Kessel moved, but moving Cole because he was cordial with the media is one of the dumber things I've ever heard in sports.

As far as the contract goes... The length is meaningless. He's guaranteed this full season. If the team is sucking next year, they'll fire him and someone else will hire him almost immediately, so the Penguins won't be on the hook for his contract for very long.

Because the Pens were badly outscored when he was on the ice? Because he got to pad his stats playing opposite Sid and Geno on the power play?

The Pens will be just fine without Kessel, let's see what he does in Zona when he isn't getting soft matchups. I expect his relationship with Tochet will sour quickly.

As far as icing his best roster at the beginning of the playoffs. Let's remember Maatta was out for a substantial amount of time and returned right before the the playoffs started. He was f'n brutal in the first game and didn't remotely look up to speed. Injuries largely dictated Sullivan's defensive deployments all season.....which is why JJ got so much time in the top 4D.

If you ask me, Sullivan's biggest mistake was asking his misfit LD to play on the right side all season while Ruhwedel collected dust. Is Ruh great....no. Is he better than Oleksiak, Riikki and JJ playing RD?.....absofukinglutely.
