I can't find any real justification here. Adding Kerftoot? Kerfoot just put up 42 points. It's not like COL is struggling for cap space.

I don’t really think it’s that bad of a trade. 3 years of Kadri > 1 year of Barrie. Their 2nd line is solid with Burakovsky-Kadri-Donskoi. If their young defense holds up, this trade is a win for them.

I dont remember how the expansion draft works but I believe they knew they were at risk to lose one of Makar, Girard, or Barrie in it. Barrie was due big $$$ and the oldest so he was the odd man out.

They already have so many good young D, did they really need another one? As you eluded to before there aren’t many in the league who provide offense from the backend like Barrie does. When I said the Avs would be fine without him (they will) this isn’t what I meant. Kadri is good offensively but the suspensions are a lot to handle

I also don’t think this is a great sign for Burnaby Joe. Kerfoot could’ve gone anywhere and he chose the Avalanche and then they traded him? I don’t think that’s going to sit well with the agents of future college players who choose the FA route

- WSCTeton17

Seems Kerfoot should have been able to land Kadri 1 for 1, given Kadri was sorta on the outs and 4 years older. Kerfoot is still on the upswing and has 4 more years of team control - production looks pretty similar

I don't see the need to throw in Barrie, let alone @ 50% retention

Heck, If they were willing to go without Barrie, I would think they would get an absolute haul at the trade deadline if they were willing to eat 50%

Boyd, I don't think it'll be Bjugstad. He's basically what Rutherford has been talking about getting. And, I think he brings a lot to the table that isn't always tangible...but, then again, who knows with Rutherford. He's capable of doing anything at any moment...

In order of who I would prefer to trade to clear the needed cap space:

Johnson (shocker)
Hornqvist

Breaking: Golden Knights looking at trade options for Nikita Gusev

A source told The Athletic the sides are far apart in negotiations, and Vegas could deal the Russian star if they can’t fit him under the cap.

This would be such an amazing get. I dont know what Vegas wants in return but certainly picks/prospects/cheap player.... would a 2nd and Jarry be in the ballpark?

Oh wait, lets be real, Shero will be all over this for like a 6th rd pick.

edit: it looks like he could be looking at $5M/year. would mean shipping out Horny... probably not feasible from Pens side.

Zucker certainly would have fit the mould. But you know what you get with Zucker, and it’s great stuff for sure.
But Galchenyuk is a more interesting player to me, he’s never played with anyone close to what Malkin is. All he has to do in Pittsburgh is what he was born to do, score goals. He’s on a contract year, being given an opportunity with the 101st best player in NHL history. The hockey gods have bestowed an impossibly rare opportunity upon him.

Could be the year Crosby and Malkin can finally compete with each other with equal lines.

- stackthepads

Zucker has also never played with a center like Malkin and Crosby, or even been a top PP option yet has scored 30 goals more recently than Galchenyuk.

Gusev fits better than Galchenyuk if it came to that as they could use him in Phil's spot on the PP. Pen should absolutely inquire.

Riikola needs to take a massive step forward to be any kind of upgrade over Johnson and the guy is not young. Not holding my breath on this one.
- Victoro311

That's kind of why I'd like to see a trade for a LHD. I am expecting better from Riikola, but better might just be replacement level. Maybe. But that's still an improvement.

Doesn't any trade they make have to be a cap dump? I think JR is done other then the aforementioned Rust/Bjug cap dump.

This tweet RW used is one of the best cherry-picked stat uses I've ever seen.

Tanev is 27 years old, has played less than 200 NHL games, has never hit 15 goals or 30 points, has never averaged more than 14 minutes/game, and has never had a positive Corsi Rel season.

This contract is certifiably insane.

Ha played less than 200 games...has 195
Never scored 15 goals....had 14
Never scored 30 points....had 29
Never averaged 14 min/game....had 14:07
Never had a positive corsi rel...was -0.1 last year and was slightly positive in rel Fenwick the past 2 years.

I mean, at least use thresholds he didn't come close to, not ones he barely missed.

Yes, they have 2.3M in cap space (I subtracted Trotman who is in cap friendly's estimate) and need 3.5-4M to sign their RFAs which gives them a full 23 man roster. So they need to lose at least 2M, an Rutherford came out and said as much.

I feel the same way except about Kerfoot. He definitely has value but not like a #2 center which I imagine many teams who don’t have one consider him to be one (like Buffalo). It really feels like Sakic undersold this. Not only did TOR need to clear space but they still need to clear more. I know Rosen had a great year in the AHL. Cool, since when do the Avs need another defender?!

Why does bother me even the slightest? I don’t like seeing hot teams get off easy. Likely doesn’t matter since Babs is still HC

I don’t think JR wants to trade Hornqvist, but if he did and wanted to shed JJ, Benning is your target. But we’d have to take back Eriksson, it’s also possible to get Tanev as well.

Hornqvist + JJ
Eriksson + Taney

May need a pick to sweeten but I don’t think anyone in Van would complain if it was straight up.

- stackthepads

I really like Chris Tanev from Vancouver. Wouldn’t be against bringing him at all. Eriksson was a player I used to like when he was in Dallas but he fell off a cliff.

Thanks for telling us. I so want to bring Gusev to this team now. We’d have to definitely trade Jacko and Rusty. I don’t think Hörnqvist is going anywhere since he plays “the right way” and is an experienced leader.

But, but, but...leadership was the issue... 😂😂

I actually like holding onto Hornqvist. He really is an EXTREMELY rare player.

He makes me mad sometimes because he can’t dangle or make tough passes. He’s a North and South type of guy who will fight for space in front of the net and battle on the boards.

I guess I’m more used to guys like Petr Sykora.

I think that's why I like him lol. I played hockey at a moderately high level and that's my game! I'm literally 5'11" around 200lbs and I can barely dangle guys in beer league lol. But, I'm fast and just go to the spots that I need. But, watching him battle with that tenacity...that's just so rare...I wish I had it.

You're looking at about 2.5 mil difference.
