That's not a relevant move honestly... he gets almost exclusively 4th line minutes already.
I'll take a 3rd or whatever for him since hes definitely been replaced... but that's just fluff - Guile
I’m just thinking financially. The difference between the Pens current space and Tanev’s contract is roughly what ZAR would be getting I think?
Maybe not now that I’m doing the math. (frank), I don’t know anymore. |

Yeah, think it needs to be a bigger cap hit than ZAR. |

I think this Tanev signing is the final straw proving there is absolutely zero plan in place for this franchise. The only players in the system capable of playing in the NHL at this point (in the near term future) are Bjorqvist and Bellerive from what I've read and locking up a marginal 3rd liner (that's a WIDE overestimate) is preventing them from coming up for SIX years...plus there was already a glut of wingers/forwards to begin with (ZAR, Rust, Simon, HQ, Bjug, Kahun, etc.). No one is steering this ship at all at this point. |

ZAR doesn't clear any cap though. 1.5 still isn't enough to sign Petts and Teddy. Someone with legit cap has to go. |

Hmmm... I really dont know what ZAR is worth salary wise. He either has to play with Malkin or hes utter trash.
If they decide hes Malkin's guy, then hes worth money. If not, why keep him. |

Moving ZAR won't give them enough to sign Pettersson and Blurger plus, when a short-term injury occurs, they'll need to be able to call someone up from the AHL.
Edit: ZAR is and RFA, so trading him gives you zero cap space added. |

It’s just so (frank)ing dumb to hear Rutherford vacillate back and forth between “youth and speed” and “push back”. (frank)ing pick one l, dude. Going with Tanev after he seemingly picked youth and speed makes it obvious he still has no (frank)ing clue what he wants or what he’s doing.
I don’t dislike Rutherford. He gave me a lot of good hockey memories between 2015 and 2017, but I am over him as the general manager of the penguins. Thanks for the Cups, old man, but please leave. |

This signing also weakens our ability to get something good for whomever is moving out. Everyone knows we have to move a player now. |

It depends on where he goes from here. If he dumps JJ and uses Tanev as his PK specialist I'm all for it. |

We kinda don't
All these years of "Trade the picks, the prospects won't be ready until the Sid/Geno window is closed anyways.... blah, blah, blah..."
Well, a guy drafted 3 years ago should be ready to step in now, the guy drafted 2 years ago should be ready to go next year
Haven't had a 1st rounder since 2014, and he was traded for Kessel
So 2015, 2016 and 2017 COULD have been about ready to step into the lineup on ELC's to play 3rd and 4th line roles, BUT... they aint here.... - RoloTahmasee
So you'd trade the 2 Cups in 2015 and 2016 for having first rounders in those years?
This is the fallout from going all-in for the Cup every year (and luckily for the Pens, succeeding). There are 30 teams who would happily trade the last 4 years of hockey with the Pens to be in their position right now. |

Reminder
This is exactly the format of dismantling Rutherford put in play when he had aging stars in Carolina that just won a cup.
Traded for and overpaid low end talent.
Welcome to Hartford Pt3 Pens fans
Just to reiterate
We lost kessel
Gained two jobbers
And still have matt cullen possibly signed 🤣
Where the F U C K is Mario in all this ?!?

The thing I really don't get about the signing is the term. 6 years for a 3rd liner (at best) is absurd... but hes not even your guy who has come through your own system. I could forgive that, just makes this situation that much crazier.
For a guy who has done nothing and never stepped foot in your locker room to get hugely overpaid in both term and aav he should be fired. Tanev has to have the same agent as JJ. |

He is, but everybody has been estimating free space based on what he may get.

Well yes, ZAR's cap hit (probably under $1M) would have to be accounted for, you're right. |

I don't like the signing, but at 27 Tanev is a young UFA and he is fast. So he fits both that and grit. It was just an unnecessary waste of cap space. |

Yeah and even if you get rid of him and replace him with a minimum salary guy at 700k, you don't save more than a few 100k. |

What will happen is they will move out Rust who is the same cap hit and a better player.

There just has to be something else going on. Like a bigger trade sending out Hornquist, Rust, Bjugstad or something.
Like Klefbolm signed for Jack all... why not pick up someone with upside and low cap and term. |

Imagine though you move, say Rust and get a 2nd or Pulj in return
That's good asset management, no? |

At what point do we say that Puljujarvi is what he is? Are people still going to be gawking over him, waiting for him to break out when he's 27? He's got all of the tools but can't put it together. |

I'd rather they find a place to stash Hornquist. |
