PIT was really lucky to lock up Crosby at 8.7M over 17 years on two different deals...I guess it is largely player driven. I miss the "second deal" in the NHL right now though..."middle class" player is being completely obliterated.

By Connor money do you mean the contract that single-handedly ruined it for all NHL GM's by skipping over the RFA deal completely for no reason other than...I can't even think of a reason why Chiarelli would have done this. There was no reason.
- Deeps27

Nah, his contract wasn't that bad. It'll be a bargain down the line. Crosby n Malkin got same cap % on 5 year deals.

The biggest deal coming off of an ELC was Ovechkin ....he got the biggtest % of Cap and got 13 years.

An off-season of rehab and training will get him back into game shape and better than he was last season.

He's not the fastest skater but he doesn't have to be. He just has to be a demon in the corners and in front of the net.

He'd be valuable in the playoffs when things get rougher.

- JohnFergusonJr

He could totally open the bench door for good players.

I kid. I also haven't seen Perry play in years. I have no idea what he offers anymore. If he was coming on a flyer, sure, but I'm sure someone is going to offer him more than 1 year / $1m.

The 11 he reportedly wants.
The rumoured 8 is that

- HB77

Term is important ...

It was reported that he wants 5 yrs. It was reported his number wasn't 11+.

8 on a 2-yr (won't happen) ...would be a dramatic overpay by Leafs compared to anything that's ever been done before.

$$$ scales up over the term.

There are some good spreadsheets out there that compare the contracts of yesterday with these "new" contracts showing how they relate as a % of Cap.

I don't think it's as bad as we think. If anything the deals Crosby, Malkin, Toews n Kane got back in the day ...tapered off a bit ...now these kids are arguing their way back towards the %'s those guys got.

The elite talent can still demand 5 yr post-ELC deals and depending on their leverage get 10-15% of the Cap.

Never.

Unlike somebody like Perry, he was never that good to begin with.

Mad Men style doesn't work anymore. Although I do believe flirting in the work place belongs only to the attractive.

Flirting = attractive people

Harassment = ugly people

I'm neither so I opt out completely.

Oh, I thought he wanted 11ish for that term.
Which is exactly why I didn’t see him settling for 8 now in the hopes of getting the same 11 later. Which defeats the purpose of the bridge from his end. Assuming he can probably get 10 long term in a lot of places.

Regardless I don’t see less than 8 on any term despite the previous market averages

His injury and his season last year might scare off a lot of teams and it might boil down to where he wants to play and who will give him a chance.

He's a Peterborough boy and Leafs did the exact same thing with Ennis last year. But Perry is way better than Ennis.

I'd liken his role to Patrick Maroon with the Blues but with way more natural offensive talent.

Even if Marner signs a 6 year deal, and I'm Dubas, I think you have to consider moving both he and AM prior to the end of their deals. I'm a team guy first and you don't want to lose these assets. Got a bad feeling that these two will bolt in a heartbeat. Seen this song and dance too many times.

lots of emojis bro...

Barrie is one of the best puck movers in the world. Sure he’s got some warts (and his upcoming ufa doesn’t help), but your entire post seems like it should be relegated to 90s hockey.

Dudes skillet is worth its weight in today’s game

And Imagine thinking you don’t want marner cause he’s not big enough....

If the Leafs can win a Cup, then it'll be more likely they want to stay.

If they don't, sign one and move the other. Probably have an easier time keeping Marner than Matthews at that point.

Think of it as $900,000 to play on the 3rd pairing, and $100,000 to be the locker room DJ.
