Well, we are already paying 1.2 to kessel....whats a few millie per. - Fakepartofme
Penguins' cap hit on Phil is $6.8 million.
Get them to eat $1.8 million.
So we get Phil Kessel on our top line for the next 3 years, and we are essentially only adding $5 million cap hit per year.
I am a franking jeenyuss.

Good point. Also, for guys like JT and Marner who have primary residences in Canada - yes they pay more tax but they get paid in USD, so 9.5M USD for Marner is $12.5M CAD;
11M USD for JT is $14.4M CAD so they aren't starving. - GreasyJungle

The Johnsson and Kapanen deals were very good. - Aetherial
Yup and Yup.
Out former 2nd line LW is now making 7M with Philly and our 2nd line C (who was more of a 3C, is making 5M in St Louis).
Uncle Leo is making 3M as a 3rd/4th liner in NY |

Even if you structure the money per year as 90% bonus and 10% salary, it drastically cuts down on the amount of taxes they pay.
I believe....
Im pretty sure thats why JT only get paid a million per year in salary, the rest is bonus.
I think.

Also, athletes pay a different tax bracket.. none of the tax argument make any sense, they all pay the same. |

A lot of the poope deals Holland (frank)ed you guys over with are over the next 2 years, I think Yzerman can help turn it around...unless it really was the Tampa team that did it all (which is possible). |

Mike Augello: Is bridging Marner a potential compromise?? - mikeinbuffalo
A+ to Dubas on the Kapanen and Johnsson signings!!!! Quality players currently capable of being top 6 forwards, but signed as 3rd liners. Kap with the RFA status after 3 years is awesome.
I was suprised you had to give up a 1st to rid yourselves of Marleau, but oh well.
Now: package Zaitsev with Brown and 3rd rounder to shed that contract. (+6.6M)
Extend Muzzin (-6.75M)
Trade Nylander (+7M)
Sign Marner (-11.5M)
Then you have about 9M to sign/trade for 3 forwards and 3D (ideally all righty's). A good chunk of that should be dedicated to 1 or 2 high quality RD!!!!

I have no idea how they structure their tax. I think they can take all of it up front without being taxed initially, and then find shelters and deductibles and other things to offset the tax rate. I suspect that x% (was it 11?) goes into escrow.
I know when *I* get my poopty bonus which contains considerably fewer digits I'm taxed at around 44% on it. |

A 2 year, 8M dollar contract would be great for the Leafs.
Not sure why Marner would be interested in that but they, crazier things have happened. - Scabeh
Sign him 2 x 8M, then 8 x 12M+ and you're looking at $11.2AAV over 10 years minimum coming of your ELC with a rising cap that won't hamstring your club (more than it already is). #HomeRun #WinWin |

Also what happens when Mantha gets the offer sheet? Nobody mentions him and he can look at Hayes' deal and laugh and want 5+ |
