Ranger Fans always want the best players, but seriously how often has it worked out for us? what has signing the best players really done for us? If we get Panarin great, if we don't I'd like to see what we are stocked with and go from there.

Gabroik 100% worked out for us. I'd say Jagr and Nylander did too. We've had a ton of busts, but some have worked out.

the fact pretty much is that the Rangers want Panarin, putting his picture up on the scoreboard at MSG in a Ranger uniform pretty much puts that to bed, even though they screwed up the right handed/left handed thing

they want him and I hope they get him, I wanted Richards badly, at that time, but I want Panarin 100 times more than I wanted Brad

- jimbro83

I have to say, I wanted Richards real bad at the time. I felt that that team just needed to add a top center to make the jump from being a lower tier playoff team to having the potential to do something. As much as that signing didn't totally work out, the team had three good years with him here and then they were able to purge that contract, so no harm no foul.

I want Panarin, but at the same time, I can't say that I am not a tad bit concerned spending $11 million on another winger with Krav and Kakko hopefully going to make the jump.

On second thought, screw the concern ... go get'em.

well Gaborik scored 40 goals twice, was traded for Brassard who had some excellent years and then he was traded for Zibanajed, arguably our best player
- jimbro83

OK we had a 40 goal scorer, but what do we have to show for it? HE has that, what did the team get? they President's trophy, do we actually care about that? won the eastern confrence, just to lose in the finals, so to show for it we have a 2nd place finish and most points

Stayed ahead of the curve on that trade. Totally worth the extra $1,000,000 in cash.

ok, whatever, you dont think it would benefit Kakko and Kravtsov's development playing with an elite talent like Panarin?

I didn't say it wouldn't hurt to have him, actually I said if we get him great, if we don't I think we should roll with what we got.

I guess what we have to show for it is several years of being in the hunt. Believe me, I wanted the Cup with that core group, but let's be honest, it's god damn hard to win. And you have no guarantees of winning it just sitting back and letting your prospects develop either. In the end, it helps to have that Superstar player and build wisely around them. Maybe we have that in Kakko or maybe even Krav. Too early to tell, I guess.

We had a hell of a run and a lot of exciting hockey. Sometimes you just fall short of total victory.

I just dont understand what any free agent in the past, whether they worked out or not, has to do with whether or not Panarin will succeed

it's the same thing as people thinking Kakko will be a bust because McIlrath was

That actually drives me crazy with the NFL sometimes. Draft a QB. The QB is a bust. No, we can't draft another QB! The last guy was a bust!

Completely agree, there are some potentially dynamic players on their way up. I am all for Panarin though. Failing that, sign Kreider and see what develops over the next few seasons.

I don't disagree with that, we keep talking about who we have lets see what they can do see if we have the pieces to build what chicago had

I agree with you that if we don't get Panarin, then I am really not interested in too much else (short of maybe some 1 year, low dollar signing that they think could help or return something at the deadline). And even on Panarin, unless he ends up with the Isles, I am not going to cry in my Cheerios if we miss out on him.

You can only put yourself in the best place to succeed. 1/3 of the league has never won the cup. The past two winners was the first time in history that they had ever won it. We all agree a championship is the goal, but you can't use it as the be all end all in evaluating every transaction. I would say all the players I listed for sure helped in chances of winning it. That's all you can really ask for.

no it's just an exaggeration

no free agent signing of the past has any bearing on somebody they sign now

no draft pick of the past has any bearing on somebody they draft now

One of those pieces was Marian Hossa, a first ballot HOF. Was Hossa a bust for Pitt and the Wings because they lost in the finals with him?

you could make an argument that the Rangers not going balls in for Chara in 2007 cost them a Cup

Maybe the team should look to poach scouts instead of young players.

or you could say that giving that contract out made it weird that he developed an allergy to his equipment right when it would really hurt the team
