I mean it still is up in the air. Outside of Zib most of the other veteran players are gone or about to be gone. What if our "can't miss prospects" don't pan out like we hoped? Why these rebuilds are always risky. I am definitely hopefully we have the right prospects and coaching system intact to make us contenders soon. But until we see it portray on the ice, always a risk of a long rebuild. Makes Panarin more important IMO
- TPC

There's no doubt, though we've had several breaks go our way in the rebuild unrelated to Kakko. Metrics show ADA was our best defender last year, he was a throw in for the Stepan trade. Georgie showing he's a viable starter was a major surprise. Buch continues to improve.

One of the things going in our favor is that OT/Shootout wins and losses are pretty variable from year to year. Last year we were 9-14 in games that went to OT (we won 3 games in OT, 6 in the shootout). Just regressing to the mean on that would give us a few extra points. That's without taking into account any potential improvement in general. We reasonably need to improve by about 14 points to be a playoff team. It's not that far fetched to think that even without Panarin we could get 85 points.

I agree with you that guys might not pan out. What we've done well though is give us a ton of bullets in the chamber so to speak. If Lias and/or Howden are busts it doesn't kill us. I think that is quite a bit different than say Edmonton or Buffalo that seem to need everyone to hit. It usually takes orgs several years to accumulate the number of potential impact young players we have. I maintain at least in feeling, we are ahead.

just imagine this

Panarin is all ready to sign with the Rangers and then he thinks to himself

"you know, that guy they have doing the photoshop at MSG has no idea what he is doing, I have changed my mind about playing here for the next 7 years"

these contracts are getting out of hand
- Mtlca66

Panarin is seeking 12. Doesn't mean he'll get it.

Also, a 7 year 77 to 80 million is about 14% of the cap. Everyone is ok with that, but 15% becomes "no freakin way"?

If the cap continues to climb, that 15% would very quickly only become 11-12% anyway.

There you go again, you perceive it as negative, therefore it’s negative. I see after a year absence, nothing has changed, you’re still the bully on the block. If someone dares not to march to your drum, they’re negative. You must be a joy to work with.

Panarin did in fact laugh it off, but Ranger management was clearly embarrassed, it was JD’s first interaction as team President, he was very upset, and that was not widely publicized.

I’m not gonna get my blood pressure up by doing this dance with you. I’m out, you’re still the big frog in the small pond.

a small pond indeed...!

still big enough to host quite a few backstabbing weaklings though

I truly hope he signs with the Rangers, he’s an exciting dynamic player, I will enjoy watching him day in, day out.
- OLDSCHOOL#6

Looks to be a dynamic player, but remember 1 man a team does not make. You need a supporting cast. If he signs here I will root for him like there is no tomorrow, probably go to DHGate get his, Fox and other jerseys I mean for 30 bucks why not. Really what I would like to see is if what we're bringing in this season with the young talent is as good as we hope it is, if we can do that and they play well and someone accidentally skates over Hanks foot to give one of our new goalies a shot I am all for it, I just don't want to be hamstrung by a giant contract thats all.

Good article by brooks - rangers won’t get into a bidding war w/ other teams on panarin over $11.25 and Trouba will sign for $7.5-$8.0m for 7 years.

You start getting into numbers that big and you have to start worrying about filling out the rest of your roster. McDavid makes 12.5 and they’re getting his golden years from 20-28. We’d be getting Panarin from 28-35(some of his prime and some of his decline) for 12. McDavid is IMO the best player in the NHL, Panarin is probably top 15 or so.

Until it happens you can’t build a roster hoping that’s what it will be. For right now we have to build a team based on the current cap.

It's sort of a good comparison, but I'd also point out that MCDs 12.5 contract would be like 14 million today, and people at the time thought he took a discount to stay in Edmonton. Chicago locked up Kane and Toews when the cap was only like 70 million. I really think if you believe Panarin will be effective for most of the contract, you do it without blinking. Rarely can you acquire a player of that ability. The only reason many of us didn't want EK, was we thought his body could just explode at any time. I don't think we have to worry here.

well, take into consideration that Kravstov and Kakko will play in the top 6 for next three years on ELC money

gotta take advantage of that

I’m not worried about him health wise, but you can’t stop aging. Almost everyone starts to slow down around 30/31, some a year or 2 later. He could put up the numbers he is now his whole contract, but I wouldn’t bet on it. There will be a year or years at the end of his contract he will start to decline, that’s any player you sign at 28 to a 7 year deal, the question is how soon and how bad. Could we get lucky and at 35 he’s still a PPG player? I guess, but it’s very unlikely. I’m on board at signing him at 11 but that’s about the highest I go. You start getting into 11.5/12/12.5 and I think I’m out. This will all come to an end one way or another on Monday and then the dominoes with the rest of the roster will continue to fall.

What happens when they pull a Marner and want 12 million off their ELC’s also? You miss out on their prime bc you’re paying 31 year old Panarin 12 million. I’m not saying don’t sign him, just things we have to consider it when doing it.
