Dreger is reporting that Panarin may be seeking $12+ million annually. I would LOVE to sign Panarin, but if that report is true, time to let him go somewhere else...

Insane, can’t give up 15% of the cap on 1 player, very hard to fill out the rest of the roster when 1 guy is taking up 15%.

After hearing Panarin wants 12+ I say we give Kreider 7 and keep it moving

It gets worse. The Rangers hosted Panarin yesterday, the entire entourage enters the arena, and there on the huge video center ice screen, is a digital photo of Panarin in a Ranger uniform, as a left handed shot! Not good.

A rumored 7 year $11M to $12M+ AAV bidding war for Panarin against the Panthers (no Florida State Tax) as favorite to land both he & Bobrovsky, means it's time for Gorton to move on, beginning with extending Kreider long term, & signing Trouba likewise. The longer the delay on Trouba, the higher his market price if not official before July 1st, due to the crazy salaries teams may pay for the shortage of remaining top free agent defensemen starting that day.

Many hockey experts expected numerous PLAYER trades league wide once the Cup Finals ended, & through the duration of the Draft & into free agency. But it never yet materialized. Also, many GM's have not extended their own pending UFA's/RFA's as expected to retain. This includes Jeff Gorton, who other than stealing Trouba via a trade, has not extended his earlier pending RFA's in Lemieux, Buchnevich, & Deangelo, after not qualifying Claesson at a low cost.

However, Gorton also has no "takers" for Shatty and Smith, despite willing to retain 50% of their contracts. Nor has he been able to trade pending 2020 UFA's in Vesey, Namestnikov, possibly Georgiev (RFA), & more recently Kreider, due likely to being low balled mainly on the latter two. That removes hopes of landing Panarin or another elite player in any means, unless first utilizing buyouts of Shatty &/or Smith, as those hockey experts had expected. Maybe Shatty could instead be used also as a forward like Smith in part was last season. Smith is about $4M less costly overall in cap charges to buyout than Shatty, including $3M less alone in 2020/21 of both's 4 year buyout terms.

what's their to be negative about when it comes to this team right now?

they won 2nd in the lottery in a draft that had two number 1 players

they acquired a young defensemen that led the NCAA in scoring last year

they got their 3 Russian prospects to sign and come over when there was speculation that one of them was never coming over

they traded for Trouba

they are a finalist to acquire Panarin for free

I mean, come on

As much as I want to trash team negative on this one, they kinda have a point. I'm with you, I'd roll the dice. Gotta win while everyone is on ELCs/under team control. If this salaries keep exploding, somehow 12 million will be seen as a discount.

Panarin was and is the gold standard for the off season. Moves would have to be made to free up room even if Gorton was willing to go to 12 million, which we don’t know if he is even willing to do. If they don’t get Panarin, as we have discussed, stay the course. Not every prospect will hit, but if the big boys do bolstered by a few others, the lineup gets lengthened and New York can augment and supplement the next year or two.

There you go again, you perceive it as negative, therefore it’s negative. I see after a year absence, nothing has changed, you’re still the bully on the block. If someone dares not to march to your drum, they’re negative. You must be a joy to work with.

Panarin did in fact laugh it off, but Ranger management was clearly embarrassed, it was JD’s first interaction as team President, he was very upset, and that was not widely publicized.

I’m not gonna get my blood pressure up by doing this dance with you. I’m out, you’re still the big frog in the small pond.

I can't remember ever being this excited at the direction of the NYR. So many chips have fallen into place in the last few months. If Panarin signs in Florida, I'll get over it pretty quick.

Salaries for this caliber of player are going to increase every year. Have to take the chance signing him now.

Pretty much this. It's not over until we actually make the playoffs and become contenders, but it feels what should have been a long and painful rebuild is way ahead of schedule.

I mean it still is up in the air. Outside of Zib most of the other veteran players are gone or about to be gone. What if our "can't miss prospects" don't pan out like we hoped? Why these rebuilds are always risky. I am definitely hopefully we have the right prospects and coaching system intact to make us contenders soon. But until we see it portray on the ice, always a risk of a long rebuild. Makes Panarin more important IMO

just imagine this

Panarin is all ready to sign with the Rangers and then he thinks to himself

"you know, that guy they have doing the photoshop at MSG has no idea what he is doing, I have changed my mind about playing here for the next 7 years"
