Sorry, but if Aho and Rantanen want 9.5 why is Mitch asking for Matthews' contract? |

Not sure which is better - paying a good salary for a talented player or paying
$3.033 Million a year for three years for a player that doesn't play any more and might provide an ocassional stench, but not much else? - winsix

Having awesome players is not problematic. Signing Marner is not problematic.
The cap issue for the Leafs is that they have way too many good young wingers so they are spending too much of their cap on forwards to be able to afford four high quality defensemen for their top 4.. They need to make trades to be able to afford at least one very good Top 4 D(preferably top pairing).
Trading Nylander directly for a good, youngish RHD would be ideal. Maybe not possible. Maybe it's a series of two or three separate trades. - Njuice
In the end correct. Too much allocated to F’s. |

Okay, I love Marner, but we need to be much more competitive then we have been for...well most of my 40+ years of life! What are we lacking most? RH D-men and grit. Why not trade Marner to someone like Minnesota for a package that include Zucker and Dumba. Zucker fills the winger spot left behind, but could drop to 2nd or 3rd line to balance the lines better. Dumba is only 24 and has 4 years left at a healthy 4mill. I'm sure the teams would want some picks or prospects to balance it more, but Minnesota gets an offensive play driver which they need badly and the Leafs get some grit and a very solid RD to fill that huge void. - butch055
We would regret moving him for a long time. Marner is on his way to becoming an elite player in this league. You don’t move him to plug holes and acquire grit. |

That's a big 'if'. I don't think Rantanen is signing 9.5 for 8 years either. Maybe 5, but certainly not 8. |

He watched Nylander avoid every corner he’s ever met and probably thinks he’s worth double. 🕺🏻

Not the greatest signings but still are not in the way for the short term.

Agreed. 22 years old. 94 points, and one off the league lead in primary assists just below a 26 year old in his prime. The same guys saying trade Marner are saying keep Nylander. WFT! lol |

If the reports are are true, Leafs offered 10x8. The issue wasn't dollar but term at that level. Have to think he would accept a little over 10 at around 6 years. If they want him for 8 it will likely take 11+. At least he's not demanding 11+ for 5. And again, Rantenan taking 9.5 for 8 years is unlikely, but we will see I guess. |

At most. But, if you've already overpaid the last 2 guys very difficult to negotiate a more fair, or hometown discount price. |

He won’t a fetch a top 2 RHD. A top 4 RHD are hard enough to find but more likely, possible bigger trade package is needed. |

Well they will move out Zaitsev for cap help. We'll see what the cost is for a RH top 4 D. |

How is offering 10 million a hometown discount? LOL. Only on the Leafs would people claim this. |
