Cap goes up.

Use your math skills.

McDavid also took a discount to help the Oilers add talent like Lucic and Russell...

Maybe McDavid should’ve ask for 14x8...

Crosby signed for 5 years.

Malkin signed for 5 years.

Toews signed for 5 years.

Kane signed for 5 years.

Stamkos signed for 5 years.

Matthews signed for 5 years.

oh

Sure guys have but how comparable is it?

I'm not sure Crosby is a fair comparable. By the time he signed his deal he had made the finals, won an art ross, ted lindsay and the hart.

Malkin had won an art ross, conn smyth, calder and the cup.

Toews had a smyth and a cup.

Stamkos is probably the closest comp, but he had already won a Richard trophy.

Matthews may do some of these things - Richard the most likely, but these guys had accomplished things before they were given the all world player treatment.

Malkin didn’t win anything other than the Calder before he signed. Same with Kane.

Toews didn’t win poop before he signed.

Stamkos had a HOFer in his prime setting him up. Funny enough, Matthews had a higher goals/game and points/game than Stamkos on their ELCs.

In his second season Malkin was second in hart votes. He got 106 points. 2nd in the league. Stamkos was scoring in the 90's and was 5th in the league in his second and 3rd year. And he also took up 11.66%. What the Leafs gave Matthews was unprecedented based on what he accomplished. Should have been 8 years. Toews didn't get 15% of the cap either.

Even if he does, that's all he will do. Useless in any other area of the game. But I doubt he hits 60 points again.

He'll get 60plus.
Maybe touch 70

for 8 years?

I would definitely sign Marner for 11 * 8

IF some team offers up 13 * 8, then I think the Leafs have to walk.

Andersen (or replacement) and Rielly are both due in a couple years as well as Kapanen, again and even Hyman has significant value.

The cap is not supposed to go up much for the next 2 years apparently, so this cap mess for the Leafs is going to continue. I think that pipeline from the Marlies is going to get pretty tapped out this year and they are missing 2 firsts in a row.

Malkin > Matthews

Matthews had a higher goals/game and points/game on his ELC than Stamkos. Also, Stamkos plays in Florida - no state tax.

Matthews isn’t getting 15% either...

Best 5v5 goal scorer since coming into the league, playing with the likes of All-Stars Hyman, Kapanen, and Brown.

I probably would too, but 11x8 for Marner is still an overpayment. But I’d rather have him on the team, I think.

So we can throw out all the other examples and roll with Stamkos who signed at 11.66% 3% less than AM. unprecedented.

I don't think 11x8 would be an overpayment after year 3 where the cap goes up and some of the new and emerging big name guys are signing for 13/14+
Does anyone actually think by year 8 of that contract that he'll be making top 10 winger salary? Even though he'll still probably be a top 10 winger in the game. Trading him for "the best package offered" would be the stupidest thing Dubas could do, unless a team seriously overpays a la Jones, 1st, + which I'm well aware is crazy.
Trade Nylander! He's greedy. Wait. TRADE MARNER. He's greedy. This place is nuts.

it’s an over payment considering what other wingers are paid. There’s no reason Marner should be the highest paid winger in the game. His agent has done a (frank)ing awesome job because if he took 10 tomorrow everyone would be happy and through the roof at this point. People would even call it a discount. Which is kinda crazy

Yes. It's still an over-payment.

He's simply not worth that much. $10M for 8 years would still technically be an over-payment, but I would do that.

He should be topping out in the high $8's to low $9's, that's where all comparables put him.

I can concede to this I guess. It's not a massive overpayment IMO, but yeah, it's still too much. But you're right, that's a contract you gotta suck up and suffer through because having him on the team for 1 mil too much is better than not having him at all.
His agent is great because he's the one doing all the talking, while coming out of it pretty much scot-free with a boatload of money being directly deposited from Mitch into his bank account. Marner looks like the bad guy because he's got an bumhole for an agent.
