Guys the last few years are getting UFA money. Look at Dry Saddles percentage. The whole system is messed up now thanks to Oilers, Leafs, Buffalo. I fully agree they are all overpaid. I have been saying for months that these RFA deals are nuts, but that's where we are now. And the Leafs are just as to blame as anyone else.

If it were down to me, I'd trade Marner for the best offer (doesn't matter what it is really) and build around the true stars on the team Riels, Snakes, Matts and Willy

Actually those 2010 deals for Kane and Toews (at about 10.6% of Cap) still stand as the best post-ELC 5 year contracts not given to guys named Crosby, Malkin and Matthews.

Anything more than 10.6% has been for guys locking into 8 year deals like Ove, Drasaitl, McDavid ....

The deals after Kane actually got worse ...Hall, Eberle, Pasternak, Gaudreau ....all these guys landed between 8.5 - 9.5%.

go to 30 non-leafs gm's and ask whether they'd like to have marner or nylander on their team - at least 28 will say marner.

We're all guessing but I think Matthews got 14% because he successfully convinced the Leafs that he best comp was Malkin ...or that he was closer to Malkin (15%) than he was Toews (10.6%).

Matthews is the only real outlier for Marner to use at this point. Otherwise the contracts are pretty bang on/predictable for these guys ...

His starting position was "I'm Matthews" ..can't blame him for that. Dubas probably said the better comp is "Hall/Gaudreau" .......

They'll get 'er done. 6 x 9.5.

Hall and Eberle no where near Marner. Even Pasta and Gooods weren't close to 90 points. Marner is unfortunately a little too good, just like Kane. I still think he signs if it's 11x8, if it's 10 he'll want 5 years. Maybe 10.5x6 or 7? Hard to say.

Which is why I don't see an offer sheet. He can only make this claim in TO. I don't think there is another team in the NHL that would pay him more than TO would. He was offered 10x8 according to Burke. I think the 5 years they gave AM is the problem. Should have been 8. Now it looks like MM says he wants 10x5.

So what? The argument still stands. IF the argument is he should;t get more than Kane, then 10.5 is 12.9% of the cap, so less than Kane's 14.7. Matthews got 14.75% of the cap.
