Starting to wonder who we will have on defense. Pretty scary.

And here's what they look like if we sign Phaneuf:

Bunch of rookies.

It's alright, take a step backwards and make a good pick in the 1st round.

Oh, wait...

It’s still June. Lots of time for Dubas to shift some of the embarrassment of riches at forward into a quality d-man or two on the backend. TITS

July 1st should tell a good story. Once all the UFA’s find homes it will paint the trade picture. I think partners will be limited though.

Have to think that Marner will accept the Leafs offer, if there is no offer sheet made.

Dubas should sign UFA's and trade for players while Marner decides what to do.. Can't let Marner hold the team hostage.

There will be no offer sheet and there will some drama and he will eventually sign. Have to say after the most boring draft in my memory, we are being treated to a really slow ass lead up to July 1.

We'll know soon enough... Darren "Paul Marner" Dreger thinks there will be.. Only time will tell.

A couple of offer sheet tidbits to think about:

One of the big tools of an offer sheet is to stack money up front - like the Weber contract.

Except that won't work with the Leafs.

And maybe the Marner camp is thinking that an offer sheet is the way to get things done - simply sign what's put in front of you, the Leafs match, and boom! he's a Leaf.

Except I'm betting the Leafs can be a lot more creative (and generous) than most other teams - putting signing bonuses next year to protect from lockout, etc.

So I doubt Marner's camp thinks signing an offer sheet is a smart move on that front.

You're right, not many teams have the same financial flexibility as the Leafs do, but recently Chris Johnston and Elliotte Freidman said it's not about money, it's about respect..

I don't know if it would be as simple as you put it.

Might as well just keep Nylander and tank for a top-10 pick and draft Schneider.

And we have to presume that 'respect' for his side has everything to do with his belief that he should at least be in the ballpark of AM.

That's got to be the great divide.

You look at and compare AM's contract against the history of any "5 year - just coming off ELC" contracts and Matthews it shows that Dubas accepted that AM is in the "Crosby/Malkin" stratosphere as opposed to even say Toews/Kane.

Now he's telling MM he's more Kane then he is Malkin and MM doesn't like it.

*Crosby and Malkin got about 15% of cap on their post-ELC 5 yr deals. Toews and Kane got about 10.5%. Matthews got about 14%.

If Marner really wants to be paid at that level, I hope he enjoys the warm winter months in Arizona.

If Marner doesn't get offersheeted Kyle should not contact him until December. Also don't accept his phone calls or calls from Ferris, Paul Marner or Dreger

Kane and Marner’s point totals on their ELCs are almost identical - Kane had 6 more points in 3 more games. Why should Marner get a lot more than Kane? On a 5 year extension, Marner shouldn’t get more than 9.5m, ideally it would be closer to 9m.

Trade the bum if he insists on 10.5+.

Dreger is a piece of sh!t, if people would stop acknowledging him, his tweets etc, he'll lose followers, post and hits.....then hopefully fade away.

Kane's 5 yr deal works out to 8.7 milly per year. After Kane you drop down to Hall, Gaudreau, Eberle ......all around 9-9.5%. That's like 8 milly per year mostly on 6 yr deals.

Kane's deal by any measurement is great ....unless your measurement is Matthews, Malkin or Crosby.

Oh yeah for sure. You don't sign him. You just allow contact in December. You sign him next summer when him and his entourage have learned their lessons.

Leafs ain't going anywhere with the D they have anyways. It's strictly an exercise for Mitch to know his place.
