From EK’s rumour

Been a good few days for the Canucks. I was surprised Jim didn't offer a 1st to FLA to make Luo retire.

How is retiring on your terms not an option when you have a contract , it was reported that the Panthers needed him to do it this way , because that cant afford the actual cash to pay the ltir

a) Pride

b) The effort involved in preparing your body to play at that level when you know they don't want you, and

3) All this headache for only a couple lousy schmill? Really? I can make that in a weekend playing poker.

In the end it was 3 parts...

A former agent GM fitting a contract into the cap. Stupid not smart
An agent who played along for the total $ in the end.
Lui signing it like a puppet.

Summary: no vision all business

And because the rules changed, gave Gillis the option to buy out the contract for no penalty at all. He decided the contract was worth the recapture risk, knowing what the recapture rule was.
- Antilles

You think buying him out was an option? He was arguably their best player at the time and probably one of the top three in the league at his position. You're going to spend many millions to make him a free agent without any compensation just because Bettman had a hissy fit? Not realistic.

I agree Carol, if Lu retiring means no stupid contract for Myers than he just made one last great save for the Canucks.

It will be a mix of rage and apathy for me. I'm going to go full bath salts on the glee club, Benning apologists and team pom-pom.
Hopefully this dumpster fire will end with Benning gone by the end of the season. Injuries will be the first excuse, then travel.

Maybe Lu just wanted to retire instead of going on LTIR and felt he owed nothing to the Canucks.

Yeah, not many felt it would ever be an issue. I got laughed at for suggesting it.

The best thing to do is follow blindly. Easier that way and you’ll never be disappointed. Take the blue pill.

No Problem. He's a new guy this year it seems. I like his reports. I think I like his different clips of other than just scoring.

Not really surprising. He's not as bad as we think and he's not as good as other teams think. He's probably fine as a regular 3rd pairing D and if he doesn't have to play with Gudbranson or Poopalot. Too many times he's had to play 1st pairing for Van though.

Believe it or not. I would sign him to a 3 year deal somewhere between the 2-2.5 range. I'd still rather have a younger 3rd pairing defender than an over the hill slower experienced defender at the same price.

He damned near got chased out of Vancouver but he's supposed to think of the Canucks?

He was offered a contract andd signed it. He didn't create the recapture rules.

I’d take Hutton Stecher as a third pairing if the price was reasonable, and there was no chance they would have to move up the roster if there was an injury.

He’s 40 and can’t play anymore. It’s not selfish. He gave up money to do so. He could have milked it but didn’t. I don’t like it either but he needed to retire.

Van now has all 3 retained salary spots back.
