if fla wanted to save money, why not trade him back? it kinda sounded like luongo retired to help out fla. trading him back here would benefit everybody.
it's an odd situation. - RealityChecker
They'd still be hit be some recapture, as they saved money on his contract when he played for them. |

but he wouldn't retire if he got traded back here. the canucks have a doctor on staff to provide the league with any report needed.

From my understanding yesterday Luongo wanted to get the money from the rest of his contract and go on LTIR. Fla wanted the cap space to go after Panarin and Bob. They told Lou they are not putting him on LTIR.
Most teams will put their player on LTIR when the recapture penalty is against their team. Lu wanted to be traded from Vancouver so I side with Booner on this . I do blame all sides . Lu NHL and Gillis. - VANTEL
Whether or not they were warned they were still the first and only team to have this rule ...shouldn’t be called cap recapture ...should be called the canucks contract rule
So if Luongo wanted to go on LTIR then shouldn’t this be more on the panthers than him ?
Luongo signed a contract with every intention of retiring now with no rules in place to affect the team who signed it ..he wanted to go on LITR ...
I put no blame on Lu

Yup he was.
He complained of concussion symptoms . So he complains that he has brain problems and the NHL hire him in charge of player safety and rules. - VANTEL
Not to mention like 40% of concussions while Chris Pronger was playing were from 10-20 game suspendable hits in today’s league made by Chris Pronger lol

Oh man, talked to my buddy who’s a ref in the show, even he can’t believe the JTM trade. And he said TM is so slow, and bad, maybe a 4M guy, not 7M.

Brock is going to get between 7-8, then you got Motte, Leivo, Goldy, Rafferty, Teves, Perron and Boucher - that's gonna eat up another 5-7mil leaving us with 2-3mil - Lu just priced us outta Myers and Meier. Unless JB moves out some contracts, but I have more faith in Driftwood buying a new set of poms poms than that happening. |

Unless we trade for him, we can't OS more than a 2nd rounder. With our 2020 pick in limbo we can't use it to OS. |

Also, and I hate to sound like a Debbie downer here, but the team essentially has 3 legit building block pieces in Pete, Brock and Quinn. And now you just went all in trading your next 3 first, 1 second and 2 third round picks.
If even one of these guys doesn't live up to your expectation, you have nothing of substance coming from your development system for another 7 or 8 years |

Even if we trade for him we still wouldn't have the cap space to pay him - unless we move out Sven, Sutter, Spooner, Schaller - but who the fawk wants any of those bums? |

The team submitting the offer sheet has to have all of the required compensation picks, and they have to be their own picks. They have to be picks for the next draft (so 2020) unless they are required to have two picks of the same round. Then they can have two of the next three year’s picks to offer.
They just can't OS between $4,227,438 and $8,454,871 AAV (5years) |

We can still offer sheet. Although it would be incredibly stupid |

Dude, there are lots of reasons to be down after the events of the last few days/weeks. I've been trying to think of scenarios where we manage to get a few picks back perhaps at this years TDL? The only thing I can come up with is if we are in the same positions as this past year, on the bubble but gonna miss the POs, who could we trade that could fetch us some high/higher picks? Maybe if Marky has another decent season and they decided to go full in on Demko but i cant remember the last time a goalie fetched a decent return as a rental?? If Tanev has an somewhat injury free season (not likely) - Rousell? Jake? Sutter? |

Also Meir is in the 30 goal club now, $7m probably isn't enough to get him to sign a 7 year deal. |

Benning would never use an offer sheet. The trade was good but it should have been made next summer. They bumped the rebuild up one year when we still need one more young premium asset. I don’t have faith in Podkolzin being that guy. If he isn’t, the “rebuild” may crash and burn. (frank)ing Aquilini and his 50 year anniversary |

Looks like you and I were wrong on the Luongo fiasco, we both said there’s zero chance of recapture lol, but this is the most cursed franchise in sports history |

Canucks are absolutely cursed. No other team has ever been (frank)ed so hard. The inaugural expansion draft, all the Stanley cup losses, the first, and almost certainly, last recapture penalty. Multiple lottery failures...franchise is doomed |

I agree - we could get that asset next draft and then somehow recoup the 1st...i don't know how but it could happen - if we had a more competent GM |

If we miss the playoffs and gain a top ten pick this draft I think we may be done. The draft is that good. If we squeak into the playoffs we will miss out on a potential top line player. It’s going to be a strange season. I dont know what to cheer for. Ideally we finish slightly better, win the lottery and hand Tampa a 25th overall pick in two years Pom poms |

I actually think NJ had some small amount of recapture with the Russian players contract (Kovalchuk) and lost a first round pick (which the NHL gave back). I still think they’ll either challenge it or make some sort of deal. |

I agree . The thing I don't want is Canucks to be the one leading this fight against the NHL. Shea Weber and Suter and Parise are going to screw their teams.
If the Canucks are held to it I would like the NHL to go back and put the teams that have placed players on LTIR on the recapture also. That is one hell of a coincidence that every player that signed one of those had a career ending injury.

the pick they were given back was 30overall, so minor punishment and they still gave up a 3rd rounder... which makes me wonder how many here would take the cap hit or forfit a 3rd round pick?
(also i didnt realize the horvat pick was potentially one of the punishment picks
