And did Ilitch do anything vindictive back to Karmanos? Like offer sheet one of the Canes RFA's or force Karmanos to eat Little Caesar's pizza?

I recall back in July of 2001 Marty Lapointe was a UFA and Holland planned on re-signing him. Earlier that season Bruins owner Jeremy Jacobs Sr. had told Mike Ilitch to stop spending so much money on players. He was driving salaries up. Ilitch told him "you're in the business of making money and I'm in the business of winning Stanley Cups."
That pi$$ed off Jacobs so much that he told his GM Mike O'Connell to "sign Lapointe to whatever it takes." So the Bruins gave him 4 years/$20 million. Lapointe was a third liner. He was never the same player after he left Detroit. Today he still takes steroids, wears fancy blue suits and attends the Habs drafts with his good buddy Marc Bergevin.
