Lettem sit. Puleez, lettem all sit. As for Marner, sit or trade, fine with either option. I’ve never understood the excessive greed. Some of these guys need to go flip burgers for a summer, because that’s about all they r qualified to do if they didn’t play hockey. After their 1st paycheque I think they’d realize $8Mil or whatever.......isn’t too bad.

The only offer sheet you might see for any of them, is the 5 year at 10.5 per. This is one that the players might sign cause it walks them to UFA status and 10.5 is a lot of $$$. Teams will hate this cause it forces them to match when the return is only 1 first, second and third round pick.
- Ross77

This. Someone like the Islanders giving Marner 10.5 for 4 years is great for Marner, he gets to UFA asap; great for Islanders, only costs two first, one second, one third; and terrible for the Leafs, big Cap hit, short contract, low compensation.

Still a low chance it happens, and not going to see anything that isn't along these lines.

When the leafs get the offer sheet for Mitch, I hope they take the pics and package them with Zaitsev for doughty.

It’s called leverage

Holdouts are more forced on a player not a choice they exercise. Nylander aside since DUmBASs set precedents signing JT & AM.

If that happened the Leafs lose a star for picks & finally have cap to fix the D. Can it be fixed no not easy at all.

The middle class is disappearing.

Just the One Percenters and the lower classes, struggling to make a living.

I blame Trump.

A team just needs to offer sheet Mitch Marner at 4 years @ $10.5 million. Return compensation would only be two 1st round picks, a 2nd, and a 3rd, forcing Toronto to match. That would make Marner a UFA at age 26. Any teams that are looking to add him to the mix could then make their outlandish offer in just 4 years without having to worry about compensation.

If that is the intent why don't the leafs just put together a Marner for Doughty deal. Would have had a much greater chance if the Kings would have gotten Byram in the draft but you never know based on the position they are now.

Wow!

Nobody has ever figured this out or mentioned it 100 times so far.

Yeah the compensation is *only* 2 firsts, second, third...

but do you want to spend 10.5 on a guy you only have locked up for 4 years? Who is almost 100% likely to go to the highest bidder at that point.

Besides, if the compensation is not 4*firsts then the Leafs will likely match... and you better keep an eye on your own RFA's in the future.

While I don't disagree with the sentiment/logic of your post, I don't buy the last line.

Has there really ever been any form of "retribution" from a team that had a player offer-sheeted? I don't recall the Avs trying to get back at Calgary for O'Reilly or Nashville trying to mess with Philly's RFA's. Or even Anaheim to Edmonton when they successfully stole Penner and Burke was livid.

Of course, none of them were as talented as Marner is...but still, I think that's a narrative that gets a little too much attention.

Fair enough, but offer-sheets themselves are exceedingly rare. If suddenly GM's open those floodgates, more players will start to play that game and I'm guessing that it is pretty likely that you will start to see retribution. In that scenario, I don't think you want to piss off one the league's wealthier teams.

5 Years from now, when Matthews, Marner, Rielly, Andersen are all gone and the Leafs are bottom feeders because they haven't drafted in the first round since WWII, they will be a rich, and angry organization with a lot of cap space and a distinct lack of talent.

Carolina offer sheeting Sergei Fedorov in 1997. It was all about Peter Karmanos wanting to stick it to Mike Ilitch. Bad blood between those 2 which went back a decade. Red Wings matched. Paid Fedorov 28 of his 38 million up front. He made 2 mil a year for the next 5 years.

And did Ilitch do anything vindictive back to Karmanos? Like offer sheet one of the Canes RFA's or force Karmanos to eat Little Caesar's pizza?

Maybe the Islanders will be offersheeting Marner as retribution for Tavares bedsheeting them last summer

Bedsheeting!

well-played

I would rather hear that term used more often than another day of "offersheet" and "sweetener" being in every other sentence.

Yeah I'm about tired of most of the stuff that gets reported. The UFA interview period should start like 2 or 3 days after the Cup is awarded and the signing period should start the day after the draft. This crap drags on too long.

Imagine how we feel... it will be all Dreger all the time, operating as Paul Marner's hand puppet until a deal gets done.

Good lord. I may have to start actually paying attention to baseball.
