Erik Haula went to Carolina (who’s very strong) for Nicolas Roy.
Good for the Canes. - Barnaby36
Nice little cap dump for Vegas. |

I thought this was an interesting from Yohe's piece on Rutherford....
Rutherford knows how to deal with people. Often, this is why general managers will talk business with him and sometimes cut deals with him that they wouldn’t consider with other teams. The Penguins, incidentally, became totally sold on Rutherford in 2012. He had complete leverage on Shero, who knew very well that Jordan Staal wanted to play with his brother in Raleigh. Rutherford was still more than fair, offering Brandon Sutter, Brian Dumoulin and the eighth overall pick for Staal. At that point, Penguins ownership had developed total respect for Rutherford. - madmike71
So they hired him because he got fleeced by Shero in a trade? |

I mean look, if he wanted $1-$2m for a one year stint? There are definitely worse ways for the Pens to spend whatever little cap room they might have. |

No. He’s implying JR could have held out for a lot less, but still made a fair deal. |

This is awesome. And some clowns insist to call Ruth an idiot. |

Isn’t McCrimmon the new Knights GM? So McPhee brought in all these talented players and McC just gave one away. If he keeps this up you can put him up there with Fenton and Benning for GMs you want to call most often |

Haula is a very solid player, but Vegas had to make a tough decision. I expected Eakin to go, but Haula is probably a player that will cost them more money next near. I think Vegas could have gotten a little better pick in return, but again, it's a cap dump and you can't always win those.
GMs know they have you over a barrel when you need to clear out space. |

Knights writer said the same thing. Not to mention they’ve got Miller who they could’ve dealt first. There was no need to rush getting nothing in return for Haula. Trading away a bonafide middle 6 forward on a cap friendly deal for next to nothing isn’t great asset management - one way to look at it is that Stone took his cap space, so an arguement could be made that he was a casualty of that trade |

Thinking the Haula trade was a good one? What if we trade Rust for a 5th and some rando? Is that a good one too? We need cap space... |

I don't think it's a great trade, as I don't see Haula becoming a perennial 25-goal scorer. But I think it's a good trade, as I can see him being a perennial 15-goal scorer. |

I still think Vegas could have got a LITTLE better deal, but they also had little choice because of the Karlsson deal.
Vegas has a glut of good forwards, so they can afford a little sacrifice. Chances are they're expecting they can keep Eakin for a small raise whereas Haula probably is looking at around $5Mish after this season.
Good thing they didn't move Miller like some were speculating. He's a an RHD in his prime years signed to under $4M. He was on pace for another 40 point season last year. |

Rumor has it Lee Anders may sign with the Wild. I wonder if the Wild have a few good pick ups, if Kessel would accept a trade there. If Ek's reports are correct and the Sharks pick up Kreider from NYR. I would have to admit the Sharks GM does a pretty good job. I think if JR wanted to get bigger and "tougher" to play against. Acquiring Kreider and Kane definitely would have been the perfect pick ups for that mindset. - 123Kid
I would think from the Wild perspective, they wouldn't have a desire to get Kessel at that point... |

Agreed, they could probably have gotten more. Very underwhelming return. |

I’m wondering if he wanted to send him east as so many of these GMs prefer to trade out of conference. Still, such a neutered return
When you already have Stone, Patches, Stastny, Karlsson, Reilly, and Smith in your top 6 you can afford to ship out Tuch and Haula to retain Eakin as your 3C if you want. McCrimmon knew he was against the cap and surprise surprise they still are! Clearing out his cap space and getting nothing in return was folly, Vegas writer says so too (he does good work btw). Vegas isn’t done. They should’ve/could’ve sent both Tuch and Haula to NJD for Mueller, Zacha, and a decent pick
NJD then...
