Would definitely have to move AA in that scenario.
- walleyeb1

OK but AA's $4.5M isn't going to cover whatever Lee would get plus some cap space would be required to replace AA at 3C.

I could see a swap of Anisimov (post-July 1) and Pageau.

Lee's wife is from Evanston, I worked with her for a short period. Don't discount that as having a factor for a slightly lower cap hit.

Also, if the Hawks think Dach is ready, they don't need a 3C replacement.

It will be interesting to see what San Jose's Timo Meier, 22 year old wing, signs for. He's had 51 goals and 51 assists the last 2 seasons.

Though not quite as high as Cat's 69 goals and 59 assists the last two years, it would be a good comparable to what Alex may be looking for.

San Jose only has 15 players signed with less than 15M in cap space. Somebody should offer sheet Meier for about 4.2M (at the cost of a 2nd round pick) to put the Sharks in a really tight cap situation.

- boilermaker100

Chicago should offer sheet him and yes payback is a female dog!I know that's not Stan's style but it would be fitting.

How would you compare Gus with Tyson Barrie? What are the fancy stats on them? Tyson Barrie is getting dealt, would Gus fetch more or less. Same age. Gus LD and Barrie RD. Barrie may be the better player with the longer track record. But Gus is $4.3mil cheaper for this coming season and might sign an extension for less.

My impression is Tyson Barrie is a better all around player than Gus, but Barrie is still a weak defender.

Barrie has one year left on a $5.5mil contract. Gus is $1.2mil.

I am not suggesting we trade one for the other.

I just think it will be worth noting what the Av's get for Barrie.

He was, as was the entire Hawks team.

Meanwhile last year on a suboptimal Coyotes team, Hjammer was +8 where (1) many players were well negative on +/- and (2) he took most of the o-zone draws and possession plus his work on the PK.

One series or not, you don't deal your best defensive defenseman without a better return and/or "timing of replacement" than we've seen.

- jrsamu

The suboptimal team with a better record than the Hawks? and much better defenseman? Goligoski., Chychrun, OEL?, who also got a career year out of Darcy Keumpfer?

I was referring to the cap impact of replacing AA - getting rid of AA doesn't mean a net gain of $4.5M in cap space because someone has to play 3C and that someone will come with a cap hit. Even if it's Dach, hie ELC cap hit will be almost $1M so the net effect on the cap to replace AA with Dach is not $4.5M - it's more like $3.5M.

Looks good. And Pageau's and Frolik's salary come off the books next year.

Stan probably was watching replays of that clean cut breakaway Kampf had in the outdoor game when he got caught from behind and never even got a shot off.

Why overpay for a borderline NHL guy like Kampf when he has guys like Highmore, Kurashev, Soderlund, and Quenneville coming into camp hungry for jobs.

Stan is learning good after that stupid contract he handed out to Jan Rutta.

- RickJ

Kampf is replaceable he is ok to me he is 4th line center or depth forward no more.

11m in space right now with almost a full roster. Could add Lee at 6.5 ish.... easy and be done

Almost a full roster? There are only 7 forwards currently. That is far from full.

I watched some clips of Dach on Youtube last night. For a big guy he has some slick stickhandling moves, he seems to skate well, he's good at protecting the puck, he's pretty dangerous around the net and there were a number of clips showing him stripping the puck off an opponent from behind. I'm really interested to follow his progress.

High danger corsi for / expected goals for

Do I have that correct?

Edit: What is the stat you like to review as an all-purpose measure of a player? Thanks.

- Chief4Feathers

That's correct. And I don't like using all-purpose stats like WAR as anything more than a starting point because it's just not good enough yet. It's better imo to look at stats as collectively as possible with context. I'm a micro stat enthusiast because it tells you more about the how/why of a player/team's performance and not just results - plus it's literally people watching games and tracking plays (every team had several people who do this, typically with their video coach).

I forget who the media guy was, but in an interview on NHL Radio the other day the person said he knew for a fact that 2 NHL teams had the top 3 players in the draft ranked as 1) Kakko, 2) Dach and 3) Hughes.

So Dach has his supporters in the hockey world.

Along with a complete dud the Hawks have had the best player twice at the 3 spot in the draft before. Let's hope they do again. Dach's name was always in the mix before the draft but Cozens, Byram and Turcotte seemed to be getting all the attention until about 2 weeks before when Dach's name started getting discussed more and more as the third best player.

Ok, thanks again. I appreciate being able to pick your brain on the advanced stats perspective - I’m a relative neophyte when it comes to this area - but I’ve decided to become more literate.

Kampf had the same issue early when Q was still the coach vs MIN

He had a chance at an EN Goal, got hooked lightly and instead of fighting through it, dove and drew a penalty. Fine and all...but the Hawk's gave up the SH goal, then lost in OT. A whole lot of issues there other than Kampf...completely get that. But I'd prefer a guy that would fight thru that check/hook instead of diving and put a team away.

Something about Kampf I just wish I'd see a little more of a Kruger level of compete...I dont think he has. I kind of hope they let him go...but I'm sure he'll be back

Unless it’s a player who’s part of a winning legacy and has a lot of personal cache...

For example, Brouwer, Bolland, Shaw, etc. are all jerseys you can proudly wear and keep your street cred.
