I’m not sure but he has the same agent as Michael Chaput, I wouldn’t be surprised to see something similar to this but closer to what Kampf was making last year: https://puckpedia.com/player/michael-chaput - walleyeb1
Winnipeg did the same thing with Beaulieu, they didn’t issue a qualifying offer because of the potential for a significant salary increase via an arbitration decision. They would still like/hope to sign him. |

Was Kampf arbitration eligible? The reason I ask it that they may have wanted to avoid the potential of a significant increase via an arb decision, rather than simply avoiding a 5% salary increase. - Chief4Feathers
I'm pretty sure he was. |

I think this is right. I know Powers reported they may have been negotiating a new deal but I just feel like someone like Brian Boyle or someone else could work. It almost sounds like we'll be seeing a revamped bottom six when the season begins. The Islanders did this last year which helped (no to mention adding Trotz and Lehner) but having that strong bottom six helped which included bringing back Matt Martin and reuniting their dominant fourth line of Martin, Cizikas and Clutterbuck and then building a third line with Valtteri Filppula, Leo Komarov, and Tom Kuhnhackl. - golfbard
Please for the love of God no Brian Boyle. One of the softest big men in history and plus he's older and slower now. |

Eklund reported that Matty Tkachuk's contract talks may be stalled. What would a package look like for the Hawks to bring him in? I would love that type of skill set in this lineup. |

They can have both Saad and Lee. - mrpaulish
I'd need to see the math on how that works for the 2020/21 season.

Could it maybe possibly within the realm of possibility be that they saw deficiencies in Jokiharju's game that could be improved by sending him to Rockford - that his future development would be enhanced by sending him to Rockford - that they look on him as a valuable future asset that at this point should be in the situation that best assures his future progress?
We see games (mostly on TV), we read some analyses, we take in the views of reporters and bloggers - but we don't see the player continuously on the ice, we don't spend hours reviewing the videos, we don't see the practices and what the player can and can't do.
Jokiharju is 20 years old - 19 last season - one year removed from playing almost completely with teen-agers - no need to rush him to The Show before he is ready AND before he becomes the complete hockey player that I'm guessing the brass thinks he will be. - StLBravesFan

Hey LBR, or anyone else who views themselves as a sports-statistic literate person, what is your perspective on the validity of the WAR (wins above replacement) measure?
Is this a good baseline measure of a player, or do you think it’s lacking in some way(s)?
Thanks. - Chief4Feathers
It's a work in progress stat - can start with it, but it has too many outliers to be a great one. For ex, it weighs HDCF/xGF a little too much in shots, which hurts higher quality shot players who score from mid-danger more (like Laine, Kane, etc). |

I'd offer ALOT...but I highly doubt CAL would let him go
He'd be perfect LW with Toews and Kane |

Yeah, I know. I come up with a different Saad replacement every day. LOL.
Serious questions - What do you do with Saad in 2 years after his contract expires? The going rate for someone like him may be what 8M in two years? Do the Hawks extend him, trade him before that, or let him walk? I know my Saad replacement ideas cover offensive minded forwards, but at least the Hawks would have his offense replaced if not more. They'll have to find a different forward to cover his defensive and PK prowess. - boilermaker100
There isn't a rush to determine what is done with Saad imo. If the Hawks aren't in a good contention position by TDL, they can start seeing what is up but otherwise just let it be on hold. |

My guess is that they want to sign Kampf to a 1M or less contract.
Surprised that they haven't got this one done yet. - Tyler Cameron
I think Kampf will be back. JC liked him and he was an effective bottom 6 centre. The Hawks like to make a splash with their signings. My guess is that they’ll coordinate their RFA signings (Kampf and Sikura) around their UFA signings.
Note: yes I know that Kampf isn’t technically and RFA anymore. |

Pass. Stan needs to improve the team’s depth, not deplete it. |

HDCF/xGF
High danger corsi for / expected goals for
Do I have that correct?
Edit: What is the stat you like to review as an all-purpose measure of a player? Thanks. |

I think you'd also need ADB to close out the deal, ummm maybe Chicago's 2021 1st as well. |

11m in space right now with almost a full roster. Could add Lee at 6.5 ish.... easy and be done - mrpaulish
This is one of those "devil in the details" things - the $11.9M cap space shown on CapFriendy is with 7 forwards, 8 d-men and Crawford/Delia. Filling out the forward roster will take 6 more forwards and even if all of them are cheapie contracts it will still consume around $6M of the cap space making the real cap space more like $6M.
If that $6M cap space can be used for only the 2019/20 season - then it wouldn't be a problem having it available next summer when Cat/Strome will get paid - but using it on Lee will mean that $6M will not be available for Cat/Strome next summer. I would rather have Cat and Strome than Lee. Plus I would rather the $6M available in 2019/20 be used on a guy like Frolik who is on an expiring contract and can help improve the PK.

And many of us don't have the trained eye to recognize deficiencies in a player's game. Or what the kid's confidence level is, or whether he is quick study, etc.

Stan probably was watching replays of that clean cut breakaway Kampf had in the outdoor game when he got caught from behind and never even got a shot off.
Why overpay for a borderline NHL guy like Kampf when he has guys like Highmore, Kurashev, Soderlund, and Quenneville coming into camp hungry for jobs.
Stan is learning good after that stupid contract he handed out to Jan Rutta. |

Rewatch the series where Nashville swept us, Hammer was very exposed in that series. - LAHawk
He was, as was the entire Hawks team.
Meanwhile last year on a suboptimal Coyotes team, Hjammer was +8 where (1) many players were well negative on +/- and (2) he took most of the o-zone draws and possession plus his work on the PK.
One series or not, you don't deal your best defensive defenseman without a better return and/or "timing of replacement" than we've seen. |
