Breaking news: The Golden Knights have traded Erik Haula to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for prospect Nicolas Roy, multiple sources confirm with The Athletic.

The official trade call hasn't happened, but the Carolina Hurricanes are closing in on acquiring Erik Haula from the Vegas Golden Knights.

Likely means they won't move Eakin then.

Gus for miller for cost certainty just asking. Plus could expose him at expansion draft.

Do we really need another 2nd pairing guy? Eso one who is just okay defensively + offensively and is signed for another 3 years. If Gus is traded, it should be in a package for a forward of some type or picks, and only if they think Jokiharju/Boqvist is going to compensate for the offense lost. Again, Gus was the 2nd highest contributor to offensive impact on the PP and 3rd on the team.

Good points and fair not advocating trading gus but a decision of keeping him or trading will an ongoing discussion.

I wouldn’t expect any additions to the defense at this point. At most maybe Murphy is dealt for a defensive forward. I think the Hawks are going to keep Gustafsson until the end of the season and give the prospects more time to develop. If the Hawks miss the playoffs again then Gus can be dealt at the deadline and will still garner a hefty return.

You have to admit that the Carolina team is not resting on their playoff laurels...fans start becoming regulars when they see the team continuing to improve with additions...

Ok sounds right but like said to lbr its a topic that will be discuss throughout the hawks season. Say he regresses then the debate will be why didn't hawks trade him when value was high etc...

then NOT the end of the season, the trade deadline.

Yup I agree.

I can't see them investing unless he agrees to a deal now at a super reasonable raise...and another vet on the dee would have get moved...

Yes, if they’re not in playoff contention.

Stan is looking to add forwards with one year expiring contracts, Gus fits the bill on defense. I don’t mind having Gus on the team, I actually quite like it. My only worry is a year from now he’ll want Gardiner or Myers type money.

That is a risk, but to be fair we should evaluate the decision now and not in hindsight. Even if Gus regresses to 40 points he’s still a good value.

I remember Patrick Sharp had a hard time scoring goals when he first came to the Hawks.

He would get short handed goals all the time and the Hawks were terrible when he came to Chicago.

First, Forsling came back from injury and then Murphy came back from injury - that contributed to Joki's reduced TOI.

Second, Colliton was under the gun to right the ship in the midst of (2) 8 or 9 game losing streaks and any coach would lean on more experienced players in that situation.

Third, Joki played with exceptional poise for a rookie in the first month or so but then some cracks started to show - he had a few deer in the headlight moments in the December/January time frame that he didn't have early on.

And lastly, there's probably truth to the thought that Stan wanted Joki kept under 40 games last season to push the team's RFA rights to him out another year.

Yeah, I thought Henri wasn't as good as advertised - not sure if it was the grind or what, but they did make him better by how they let him play elsewhere...I am sure Henri comes back a better player.

He played early by way of necessity and each good showing helped him play the next night...until it didn't, on a team full of cracks, he got exposed and it was simply a growing up experience too.

Pretty straight forward if you ask me.

Outcome A - Gus performs at the same rate (more or less) as he did this past season, which makes him an extremely important cog to the Hawks offense and their PP.

Outcome B - Gus regresses big time, but it makes it that much easier for the organization to decide to let him walk after next season, or if he was hurt/there’s a reason he regressed as much as he did (but the team is optimistic anyhow), then you can afford to re-sign him at a reasonable rate, should they choose to.

But either way, it’s a win-win gamble. The Hawks can’t afford to move him now because there’s not a single defender on the team that is capable of replacing his offensive production (assuming Boqvist will not be a Hawk this upcoming season). Therefore, there really isn’t an argument to be made as to why the team didn’t decide to sell him when his value was at its highest. I’m sure the team fielded calls on Gus, but ultimately decided that the offers they were getting weren’t good enough to warrant parting with him, and that he has more value to the team (in a similar way Saad does) than he does to other teams.

I didn’t understand the Henri love at all last season. I didn’t see anything that warranted him staying up with the organization, so it was (to me) the right call to send him to Rockford where he played much better, and has had a pretty good showing since. Hopefully he’s more ready this time around and he makes it difficult on the coaching staff, but I would have no qualms with having him begin the year in Rockford again, or simply sending him down when de Haan comes off the IR (presuming he starts the season on it) if he’s not producing. We can’t lose sight of the fact that the kid just turned 20. There’s absolutely no need to rush him into anything.

The Canes taking every salary dump? The Hawks have a RHD for them...

Haula was good with Minnesota. Almost as if he flew under the radar then when he got a golden opportunity he was good in Vegas. Knee or whatever surgery resulted in missing most of last season. So now he will be out to prove himself again. Going to a team wherr he can do that. Does Haula and J Staahl play in bottom six bottom two lines?

I don't want him. Although to be perfectly fair, I do not know if his game changed at all last season. We need big fast and physical and he is for most part just fast maybe ok scorer.
