Because the last GM completely screwed this franchise.

We don't have depth because Murray traded it away. We're worse for the RoR trade now, I get that, but he won big on the Skinner trade so to me it's averaged out.

We don't have a lot of chips to trade with, Botts is short stack. I don't disagree that moves need to be made, but don't want to discount the fact that Botts has one hand tied behind his back either.

- RhinoFan

I get all that. And I truly believe that Botterill will make this roster better this summer.

But I don't think we, as a fan base, should accept it if he doesn't. It's literally his job to make the team better, and doing nothing is antithetical to that. And the next person to mention 2021 being the start of our window gets the stool

50% of the conference makes the playoffs. In year 3, that should be such a modest goal

BS.

The excuses for Botts need to stop.

This team needs to be good, if they suck next year he can go too.

ror out
skinner, hunwick and sheary in

pretty much a wash

- homiedclown

So Risto get's moved and whatever that return is

and another 2nd liner comes in (Skinner comparable)
a 3rd liner comes in (Sheary)
and a depth defensemen comes in (Hunwick)

I would say Botts has to win the Risto trade but if he brings in someone for the 2nd line, a decent 3rd line winger and a depth defensemen in trades

not to mention free agency

I would think that constitutes trying to improve this roster

I have been waiting 50-years for a championship. What's another year of pain and suffering.

Even with virtually the same team, i think we would probably be and 80 - 85 point team. All our good young players will improve, our goal-tending has to improve and we have a new coach that actually sounds like he knows what he is doing. Plus we have a bunch of UFA's such as Bogo, Scandella, Sheary, Hunwick etc and guys always are extra motivated to have "career years" when their contracts are up (see Drew Stafford for reference). My biggest concern is that Botts "pulls a Murray" and trades away one of our few good assets for an older asset just to try and bridge the gap. My other concern is that he signs Anders Lee for 7 X $7 or somebody of that ilk during the UFA period.

We are all frustrated with the ineptness of the franchise over the past decade. But i think we have one more year of "suffering" ahead of us. Next year is when we can really go for it once all these deadweight contracts get off our books.

And then we can have another GM come in and trade all of Botts prospects and players he doesn’t like and start over.

Sounds great

- OneKaneOneCup

What better time than then when you are having all this cap space become available. Then I don’t have to hear the excuses how the GM was handcuffed.

His record as GM is as bad as Tim Murray’s. And Murray lost on purpose.

Discuss.

Firstly, the premise of the article is "what if the sabres did nothing?" - my commentary is a response to that

Secondly, this is year 3, the term "quick fix" no longer applies. It's now just doing his job

- jcragcrumple

Doing his job is making sure we have young talent to supplement the few very good player we have.

Not “just doing something” that’s in all reality is probably a lateral move.

By year 3 of Duchene we’d be begging for a buy out

One other point on this: if Botterill fails to make a significant move, it would read to me like he's afraid to have a move backfire on him. You can't have a GM with a case of the nerves
- jcragcrumple

I want him to make the right moves, not making one for the sake of it. I’d rather stand pat than make deals that damage us both short and long term. #okposo #hewhoshallnotbenamed

Depends on how this next lockout goes

If they get 2 cap compliance buyouts

Duchene and Okposo

The next Duchene deal is going to feel like the Scott Gomez deal he got with the Rangers IMO

We suck at drafting. If we waited for that, we'll all be dead before it happens.

I am so sick of the pipeline

So keep drafting and just hope that they may be good in 3-5 years?

Or instead they will give zuccarello a 5-year 30 mil deal.

Other teams. Yea we will give up picks to get good players now.

Buffalo - need all the picks. Draft all the players. Be good soon-ish.

Michael Pachla: What would you do if Sabres GM Jason Botterill made minimal (or no) moves?
Free agents may be too costly and now one knows what's available on the trade front

- Michael Pachla

Roll over and go back to sleep. Another subpar season ahead for the blue and gold to p*ss away.

Don’t worry everyone it’s the 50th season.

The Sabres are going to distract you with fan fests, promotions, fun colors and noises.

To get us out of the mess of GMTM,
and then turn us into actual “contenders”
That’s not happening in 3 years

We still have guys we all clearly don’t want here anymore but are stuck with
Many are gone after this year
So that will free up room to make some moves

Overreacting bc we don’t have a partner for Dahlin yet is ridiculous though

This fan base needs at least 2 rounds of playoff hockey to rid the arena of book readers and kids.
