If he accepts an offer sheet, he's accepting he might land there because the Leafs could just as easily match and he stays where he is.

It's a risk they might take to get what they want.

Either way, he'd survive.

- JohnFergusonJr

So you are saying if you were in a contract dispute for more money at your job near your home for 70K at 5 years you would sign a 5 year contract in Houston for 90k with the only way getting out of it is if your company offers you more?

I am not doing that. That’s for sure.

You are forgetting players have lives...it’s not as easy as you are claiming it is.

70,000 Canadian vs. 90,000 USD for the same job?

Here I come Houston.

He's 22. He has no life other than hockey and Fortnite yet. And he can go anywhere he wants when he's 27.

Accepting an offer sheet is very risky on his part if he really wants to play in Toronto.

He has to fully want to play for that team and live in that city.

It’s not a negotiation tactic at that point.

i heard he still wears predators pj's.

I think you're getting confused with my point.

Let's remember, maybe he does want to really stay in Toronto for the endorsements and for the hometown etc. but he wants to also make 11.6 AAV for 5 years. So all he really needs to do is get a team to give him that offer sheet and wait for the Leafs to match.

And maybe that's why Dubas said "we might not match" to try and disarm his agent from trying that strategy.

- JohnFergusonJr

Then he's not gonna be here. Simple

Does he want to be a leaf and get well paid or does he want to get overpaid ridiculously and go somewhere else (somewhere he never dreamed of playing for)

They can't fit it in even with that.

And it's absolutely moronic to overpay him that much. Completely stupid. He's not worth that. Take the picks are move on.

Sure they can. Brown, gone, Zaitsev, gone. He'd fit.

It's actually moronic to take the picks because those picks don't replace him. Especially if they're coming from a contender that won't have high picks.

If they sign him for 11.5 and subtract brown and ziatsev they have round 1.5mil to sign 2 dmen and 2 forwards. They'd have to make even more moves to fit it in.

A contender isn't going to sign him because they don't have the room either.

You can't overpay a guy by like 2-2.5mil, just absurd. If he wants to be a leaf h can take a fair deal, if he wants to be greedy then he's out.

The difference between 9 and 11 is 2. That's just Brown. They have plenty of space after they got rid of Marleau and put Horton on LTIR.

Nashville could sign him. They got plenty of room.

It's not ideal to overpay him but it's better than picks that won't replace him. Losing Marner is a serious step backwards.

Exactly.

That is why, if I am Dubas right now, I know exactly what I will do if there is an offersheet and how high I will go to sign him with or without a sheet.

At this point, I would just tell his agent that the offer was made, call me when Mitch has actually signed an offer-sheet from another team.

If he's already turned down over 10mil and he goes out pimpin for an offersheet and nothing comes up and he comes back to the leafs then he's dead in the water and they have him by the balls. Oh you didn't want our overpayment we offered a week ago and you got no offersheet? Yeah well it's not 10anymore, take 9 now.

Mike Augello: Leafs release 2019-20 regular season schedule
- mikeinbuffalo

trade all of these greedy, pencil neck creampuffs to the same team for some real dmen who don’t want to milk injuries and play house for half the season and some heavier forwards

then these “highly skilled” pantywaists can jack each other off in the change room while they win the presidents trophy

then we crush them into the glass and snap there pencil necks on our way to the cup

MAYBE keep glassthews

what a (frank)ing joke

edit: nice alliteration

Like I said, Subban still had those deals in Nashville after he left Montreal. If Marner is a good enough player (he is), he'll get it anywhere he plays.
- JohnFergusonJr

PK Subban is a different character, very outgoing, and markets himself differently then anyone in the NHL. Marner would not get the same endorsements anywhere else. This is common knowledge....I have no idea why people want to try to say its not true, pretty much every player, GM, and talking head have confirmed this about Toronto.
