Marner is guaranteed to leave them anyways if they don’t wanna cup
It’s a science apparently - Santo_44
You must have skipped chemistry. All experiments must end in ONLY the Leafs blowing up. |

There are two real tiers to NHL endorsement deals. The first tier is really low hanging fruit .....local businesses and small deals with bigger companies. There are a bunch of athletes dialed in to those deals and they don't really push the needle in terms of enticing players. The upper tier comes from big Canadian companies or Canadian branches of US companies. Bell, Rogers, Gatorade, CCM ....
Crosby, Ovechkin and McDavid are locked into those big deals. Matthews is likely on his way if he wants it. Marner too ...and I think he has a better chance at locking in to those contracts if he stayed in Toronto (or say a Montreal). Those guys make upwards of 4-5 milly per year from endorsements.
That's why it's a factor. - The Law
Like I said, Subban still had those deals in Nashville after he left Montreal. If Marner is a good enough player (he is), he'll get it anywhere he plays. |

There is a much larger market for endorsements for hockey players in Toronto/Montreal.
It’s just a fact. Larger market=more advertising
The more people that recognize a face the higher the cost to advertise.
Have you been to Nashville? Over half the people can’t name a player on the team. It’s just the market they are in.
As Rick about Boston where it’s an even larger market in the States...they still are not close to Toronto.
Hockey in Canada is huge...it’s not even close in comparison in the states. |

Subban has tiny deals in Nashville ...and maybe some hungover contracts from his time in Montreal.
Subban in Toronto ...with his personality. He'd be earning more.
It's a factor. |

I think you're getting confused with my point.
Let's remember, maybe he does want to really stay in Toronto for the endorsements and for the hometown etc. but he wants to also make 11.6 AAV for 5 years. So all he really needs to do is get a team to give him that offer sheet and wait for the Leafs to match.
And maybe that's why Dubas said "we might not match" to try and disarm his agent from trying that strategy. |

Accepting an offer sheet is very risky on his part if he really wants to play in Toronto.
He has to fully want to play for that team and live in that city.
It’s not a negotiation tactic at that point.

Rumours over the last year or so is that Under Armour is trying to take over the hockey world. You know who they have signed up currently on their NHL roster ...
Price
Hall
Doughty, and
Mitch Marner.
If I'm under armour I'd prefer Marner lighting it up in T.O. for the next 10+ years. |

Nah I get your point. I agreed with it generally. My point was don't forget to at least consider endorsements in the arithmetic. You told me I was a poo head for saying that. |

Marner and Subban seem the types that love them some attention. I like it. Hockey needs more of them both. |

Not really. Still gets his 11.6 over 5 years, a shot at the Cup on a contender and becomes a UFA in 5 years.
It's a fully viable negotiation tactic. It's exactly why they're talking to other teams. |

Alright so we're all in agreement. Marner signs in T.O. for 6 x 9.5 on Friday because he doesn't want to (frank) around with Matt Martin's wedding on Saturday. |

No man. You don’t understand.
Talking to teams is a negotiation tactic...he doesn’t have to commit to anyone.
If he accepts an offer sheet he’s fully accepting that he will land there.
This isn’t NHL 19. It’s not just numbers and hockey players that show up to the rink. A chance at a cup and money is not a hockey players life.
If he leaves Toronto he’s moving away from his family, his friends, his teammates, his house, his girlfriend, ect.
Also who is this imaginary team that has a shot at a cup?

Hey I don’t know his girlfriend.
She could be doing well on her own working her way up at a job close to Toronto.
JT’s gf wasn’t with him in NY. She was working in Mississauga.
I don’t think it’s very smart to throw away your career for a guy/girl.
But I’m also not saying it’s a bad thing it could be a good thing....they could want to move away. The moral of the story is there’s a lot more to hockey than money and a shot at the cup. |

If he accepts an offer sheet, he's accepting he might land there because the Leafs could just as easily match and he stays where he is.
It's a risk they might take to get what they want.
Either way, he'd survive. |
