Ya I’m thinking term is sticking point.
Leafs want 3 year or 6 year.
Marner wants 4 or 5 year.
Marner doesn’t want 8 because it would probably be a bargain come 5-8 years.
And leafs don’t want to walk him to ufa at 4 and 5. - bryant
Which all points to a settlement at 10.25 x 6 or so. No one really happy or mad. |

Respectfully disagree. Preds already showing signs of decline, Rinne not what he was, gave away PK for a pack of smokes, Josi a UFA next year. It doesn't take long for a good run to end. - winsix

They just need to miss the playoffs once. Lou will rig the draft lottery again. Wait... oh |

Seems about right, but people are always mad
Whatever happens, the Leafs won't cave at 5 years and have his contract up along side Matthews'. |

No way to say that and state it as a fact. We don't know for sure.
Rinne is 35, has had some adventures in goal, do they re-sign him at 37? Is the backup any good?
Ryan Johansen is a very good hockey player - is he really worth $8 million for 14 goals and 64 points? And he was their top scorer! |

Exactly. And if that means another .500 a year, I think they do that. |

They are still a solid team for a few more years. Not a bad enough future to expect to replace Marner with one of those picks.
Yes, Sarros is good and so is Rinne, had better numbers than Andersen.
How much better is Johansen with Marner beside him? |

OK seriously.... FFS
We offered him $80MM plus another $16MM to $24MM in endorsement money and that isn't enough for a guy coming off his ELC?
Seriously? - .HOHO.
UH?
where the hell does it say he was offered any endorsement money?
Plus no hockey player makes anywhere close to 16 -24MM in endorsements. |

5 years isn't ideal but there's nothing to be scared of.... Summer of 2024 the Leafs with more than 30 million to spend on whatever they want. Nice..... |

How much you think he makes in endorsements in Nashville compared to T.O.? I don't know either but it's a factor. |

I say they are playing with fire if they make that deal, knowing that the Weber issue will be hanging over their heads. Note that he will make $6 million in salary (bonus money all gone) for 3 more years. After that it goes to $3 million for one year and down to $1 million for the last 3 seasons. I would say there is a strong possibility he retires at age 37 or so. This is not trivial we are talking a $30 million cap hit over 4 seasons.

Not true my friend. The best (see Forbes and other sources) earn about 4 milly in endorsements annually. So over 8 years thats 32 million. |

I know Crosby was making over 1.5 million a year with Reebok. Plus he had Gatorade, Tim Hoes, and Bell. Somewhere around 5 a year over his salary. |

There are two real tiers to NHL endorsement deals. The first tier is really low hanging fruit .....local businesses and small deals with bigger companies. There are a bunch of athletes dialed in to those deals and they don't really push the needle in terms of enticing players. The upper tier comes from big Canadian companies or Canadian branches of US companies. Bell, Rogers, Gatorade, CCM ....
Crosby, Ovechkin and McDavid are locked into those big deals. Matthews is likely on his way if he wants it. Marner too ...and I think he has a better chance at locking in to those contracts if he stayed in Toronto (or say a Montreal). Those guys make upwards of 4-5 milly per year from endorsements.
That's why it's a factor. |
