They are managing their assets very well. Do not like to overpay, in an NHL with a salary cap, how many really good contracts a team has makes a big difference. Tampa and Boston have several really good players at good cap numbers. It makes them smart, not broke as you inferred.

I have to say the question has made me wonder about the valuation of Marner's contract. It's a great question because when you look at it more closely . . . .

In Even Strength play, Marner produced the 3rd most points/60 of anyone in the league.

Kucherov: 3.61
McDavid: 3.32
Marner: 3.23
Kane: 3.17
Gaudreau: 3.11
Tavares: 3.1

Point is 23rd at 2.8. Not exactly bad.

In 5v5 play, Marner slides to 5th (behind Kucherov, Crosby, Shaw (?!) and Tavares, but ahead of McDavid); Point is 12th in 5v5 play.

In fact it's the Powerplay, where you'd think Marner would excel, that he's weaker. He's 46th where Point is 7th.

In other words, Marner's production may have been diminished by the system deployed for the Powerplay, but otherwise he is very likely already a top 5 player in the league.

They are negiotiating, we don't have an idea of actual numbers, but they lost $3.9 million in 2018 missing the playoffs, and played two rounds last year so, I would think they made money. According to Forbes the Team is worth about $420 Million which is up significantly since Dundon took over. They are about the same as Colorado and Nashville and will improve IMO. If they get Aho long term for about $7 to $7.5 it will be a good deal. A team that is competetive owning good assets with a low payroll is doing a good job and in a position to get much better quickly.
