I should've clarified. Assume you're starting a new team and either of those is available for your first pick. - RickJames77
Still Marner. |

To play with his Finnish buddy KK! - Scabeh
No
Seriously though, the last offer sheet we saw (I think) was Weber. Or was O'Reilly after that? Anyways, my point is that the last offer sheet we saw for 4 1st rounders was by a team that can spend. so they front loaded a contract to Weber, who played for a team that may not have had the financial capacity to match. I think you could see something similar play out with Carolina. |

That was the first thing that crossed my mind . . .I don't know. If he was so good, someone would have hired him by now. Since Hunter resigned from the Leafs:
Edmonton Oilers hired Ken Holland
Detroit Red Wings hired Steve Yzerman
Philadelphia Flyers hired Chuck Fletcher
Tampa Bay Lightning hired Julien BriseBois
New York Islanders hired Lou Lamoriello
Minnesota Wild hired Paul Fenton
Detroit and Tampa were pretty foregone conclusions, but for the others, I don't know how seriously he fit into the mix. I think Edmonton had in in their final three until Holland showed interest and trumped everyone. - Monkeypunk
When Dubas and Hunter were with the Leafs it was Dubas who teams wanted to speak with. No one asked to speak with Hunter.

No, I just don't understand the move is all. That move doesn't take them out of the bottom third IMO, even with the influx of young talent, so what's the point of trading a potential lottery pick for J.T Miller?
Edit: Oh, I guess he protected it. Still, I could see Vancouver miss the playoffs in 2021 as well. - RickJames77
Exactly, Miller had 13 goals last year 24 points on the PP - on Tampa. He's a third liner on most good squads and he's overpaid. Benning went full Chia IMO.

Vancouver is such a confused organization with no direction. Are they rebuilding or going for it? No one knows. |

QOTD: Who would you rather have: Marner or Point? - RickJames77
I have to say the question has made me wonder about the valuation of Marner's contract. It's a great question because when you look at it more closely . . . .
In Even Strength play, Marner produced the 3rd most points/60 of anyone in the league.
Kucherov: 3.61
McDavid: 3.32
Marner: 3.23
Kane: 3.17
Gaudreau: 3.11
Tavares: 3.1
Point is 23rd at 2.8. Not exactly bad.
In 5v5 play, Marner slides to 5th (behind Kucherov, Crosby, Shaw (?!) and Tavares, but ahead of McDavid); Point is 12th in 5v5 play.
In fact it's the Powerplay, where you'd think Marner would excel, that he's weaker. He's 46th where Point is 7th.
In other words, Marner's production may have been diminished by the system deployed for the Powerplay, but otherwise he is very likely already a top 5 player in the league. |

Carolina Hurricanes are owned by Tom Dundon. He's young owns 55% of a little company called TopGolf - and he sure as sh!t is not broke. Where do you get your info from?

This.
And I feel like Marner has that ability to "step up" in big games. You need to put some value on that.
Haven't seen that from Point yet. Despite an interesting run 2 years ago. - Scabeh
Marner disappeared for 4 games against Boston... not sure about him showing up consistently when checking is tight |

I think people are just used to see Carolina on a budget.
Dundon has all the money he needs, you're right. |

I can give you many many examples of rich owners who don't want to lose $ on a sports team. That proves nothing. His budget as owner has been the smallest in the NHL.
I see no evidence he's spending on the Canes. In fact, let's hope those rumors of 8 years/6 per are not correct for Aho. |

If a team signs him to 8 x 11 and it's a front loaded, signing bonus heavy contract, I'd be interested to see what he does. |

Carolina Hurricanes have had the lowest payroll in the NHL since he became owner.
They announced a big search for a GM a year ago, then worked trickled-out they were offering 400K for the GM and no one wanted it.
Where is the evidence this guy will spend? |

Even though I agree with your general assessment. |

But a 1st rounder gives him a cheap, controllable asset.
Are they really offering Aho 6 million per? That's bad. |

That's mostly because of how they were built if you ask me. Lots of young players on interesting contract.
I don't remember them moving a player because they didn't want to spend the money he was worth. |

Think about paying, literally, 3.8 million for a late first round pick. That is a lot of money. There were executives of teams that said there's no way they'd even spend close to that for a 1st round pick. |

There is no evidence he won't spend money either.
And they ended up hiring Don Waddel and Rick Dudley. Pretty sure these guys weren't the cheapest guys on the market. Dudley was already assistant GM in Montreal.
I guess we'll see how he handles things from now on with young players due for big raises. |

The same can't be said about Melnyk I would venture, but Carolina is a an improved organization financially. Their attendance numbers should improve as well as the team gets better.
