Alfie screwed over the Sens three times.

#1. He openly in the media gave up on the team in the playoffs. When he was asked about coming back in the series. He just flat out said they weren't going to win
#2. After having a front loaded contract and already making his money, he was pissed that he only make $1 Million in his final year with the Sens. Then after EM gave BM the go ahead to sign Alfie no matter what it took. Alfie kept saying 'I'm debating retiring, BM very openly said what if we signed you and if you don't like it we'll trade you. Then without notice, he signed with the Wings without even giving BM a call.

Murray very clearly laid out a time line for everything in a press conference when it happened.

#3. After they let him retire as a Sen and retired his number he went into management and then randomly quit without any notice to the fans as to why.

On #1, it may have been emotions talking.
On #2, Alfie didn't get a front-loaded contract. He purposefully took a pay cut in his later years to give the team a money break at the time. A hometown discount if you wish. The understanding was that he'd be compensated on his next/final signing. When that didn't happen, he took an opportunity in DET as he had player friends there that opened up the door for him. And there's NO WAY Melnyk would've given a blank cheque. In fact, this was probably the first reveal of his future (lack of) spending pattern.
On #3, again Melnyk. Hard to be in management when your advice is ham-stringed by a certain owner.

Back to the OP's subject matter however, I'm not 100% convinced he (Alfie) should be in. As someone else already posted, Alfie was consistently good, but never had a certain greatness/magic touch to him.

Dreger reporting that a team is prepared to offer sheet Marner 14-15 million

Holy (frank) it's actually happening!

- Komisaurus Rex

well - if Dreger is "reporting" it ... then it must be true.

or is he just pulling this one out of his backside again?

Zubov was a tremendous player. Happy to see him get the nod. 2 1999 Stars added to the Hall, I like it.

#1. It could have been emotions talking. But you still don't do that. You should be emotional and say "We're coming back with the intention of winning"

#2. His contract was certainly front end loaded, he made well over value in his first few years. His spin was that he took a home town discount. But if you didn't want that. then don't sign the contract. Also Bryan Murray, flat out said in his press conference that Eugene gave him a blank cheque and said "get alfie signed no matter what it costs". Murray then called Alfie three times over that summer and said "Whats it going to take" and Alfie kept saying he wanted to think about it and that he only wanted to play for Ottawa. Then Murray turned on the TV to see that he had signed with the Wings.

#3. Doesn't matter who your employer is, when a team has just let you come back to retire and just retired your number. You don't do that to the fans. You say "I'm stepping down to spend more time with family" or something like that.

I agree, but his numbers are there for the HOF, he was never elite but he was consistent. I think the three facts I listed above, paired with the fact that he never won a cup is enough that he doesn't deserve the HOF

Guy Carbonneau going into the Hall of Fame. LOL

Most goals in a season 26. Most points 57. And that was in the freaking 80s.. when Bob Probert scored 29 goals.

But...but...but.. he took a bunch of important face offs and killed a lot of penalties and won some Selke trophies.

If you want to start recognizing defensive players in the Hall, ok I guess. But how the hell does a defensive forward get in before all the great defensive DEFENSEMEN in history?

Someone joked about Kevin Lowe.... but seriously and sadly, if we are going to go with defensive players, he's probably more deserving...
