This is why Trevor Linden left

He wanted to be patient, draft and build

Aquillini wanted playoff revenue NOW, hence the FA signings and win now trades

Benning is a Puppet

- RoloTahmasee

Trevor Linden was a PR puppet and nothing else. He wasn't without fault. The guy may have wanted to take a more patient approach to draft/developing/rebuilding, but he also had blind loyalty to veterans, which completely contradicts his philosophy on how things should have been handled. All in all, Canucks management is a sitcom.

I admit am a little uneasy about this trade, but I don't understand the complete outrage. Just a couple of thoughts...

1. Is there a top 6 player, in the same age range as Miller that you could target in Free Agency that you could realistically sign 5.2 million over 4 years? Suggestions anyone....

2. Miller is similar in production to Horvat, wouldn't the Canuck fans expect a No 1 if he got traded?

3. Vancouver is getting crucified over this but there is little talk of the Maple Leafs trading Patrick Marleau to get out of a cap hell and had to include a first overall pick to do that. They lose an asset and a future asset for a six round pick. At least we get four years out of a decent player.

I was way more upset when Gillis traded our first round pick for Keith Ballard. I am hoping we are going to be better in two years and that we are not going to have worry about a lottery pick . Worst case scenario, if that were too happen, you recoup that first for Miller at the trade deadline.

Plus the Leafs trade a 1st rounder plus 2 prospects for Jake Muzzin - 29 year old journeyman LHD with no offence and the pundits applaud Dumbass.

Absolutely agree!

2018-19 STL Blues and OTT Sens are perfect examples of when you should and shouldnt trade your 1st round pick

- Turnitaround

Meh. The Sens traded their pick when they'd just been a goal away from the finals, and the Blues were days away from blowing everything up this year. They were also in similar situations when they traded their picks.

Trading picks is always a risk. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't. They've also used pretty much all their first round picks In the past decade. They can afford to give up one to get a sure thing.

It's not like the Blues won a Cup only building a team with picks.

No offence? I think he’s had a little. 26th overall in 5v5 points over the last 3 years. ( for D )

32nd if you count PP points etc.

Journeyman? He only played for the Kings before coming to TO.

Anyways, I liked the trade but he seems a bit slow, but he was instantly our 2nd best D.

This is a statement not long ago from James Tanner:

People intensely overrate 1st round picks.

I’ll just leave it at that.

Thank you thank you thank you for all your takes, bang on. Tanner is the best on it. Too many Vancouver media and too many fans (although really 1 is too many) dance around the issue when it comes to Benning instead of just saying it. The guy is dumb as a rock, and the dumbest freaking GM in the league (now that Chiarelli is gone, and oh, rumor has him maybe joining the Canucks; of course, dumb and dumber reunited).

I've actually been in social media debates with Benning Bros who try to defend this trade. It is stockholm syndrome, writ large. Under this management the bar is so low that when we re-sign Edler for 2 yrs at 6 mill it's such a relief Jimbo the moron didn't give away the store that we're practically dancing in the streets. Jimbo and Fredo Corleone Aquilini, the idiot brother in charge of the team, are driving this thing into the ditch.

For fans, the drafting is what makes it more painful, because in fact that's been solid and there's hope there, but Benning can't trade or sign players to save his life. It's truly astonishing to see this major league nitwit pantsed time and time again by other gms and agents, and the do-do owner sits there with that stupid look on his face. Benning is the peter principle in life, never should have risen about a draft AGM guy, sitting their with his sidekick, bagman Johnny Ola Weisbrod.

And the team was also slimey enough to only say "conditional draft pick" in its announcement about the 1st pick in the trade. They knew it was an over pay and Benning doesn't give a crap; he's fired in a year anyway.

I just hope somehow dingbat Fredo lucks upon a GM who can fix the mess and get the most out of the young guys.

Rant over, but thanks for the straightforward truth gents

There's outrage cause TBY shouldn't be handed a 1st when they are the ones in a cap crunch. That's the problem here. Too many Canuck fans are trying to defend the trade to make themselves feel better. You can't. Benning is rolling the dice huge. A 1st from a team that has been bottom of the league for many years.....inexcusable.

Miller will be a nice addition to the lineup. But now we have to hope to god this team makes the playoffs in 1 of the next 2 seasons or there will be another riot.

Pick back to Tampa was horrible, Vancouver needs to move to Memphis like the Grizzlies did.

Yep, well thought out though, you need to move out of this Forum.

Jesus ffs! the wheel goes round & round... JT Miller (another laughable contract) & giving up a 1st (for no reason..?) Another team completely mismanaging their cap... well prepare for the Canucks to stay bad than... u cant make these kinds of mistakes & expect to compete

PS i find it hilarious that JT Miller has very identical numbers to Hayes but (frank) logic eh philly! so far this offseason RIP Philly (Hayes) Buffalo (Skinner) & now Vancouver...expect t see these guys near the top of the lottery!

The fact u said that disgusts me.. is that what u really believe that lowly JT Miller is equal to Horvat?!? Wow! maybe this sport isnt for u, i just cant deal with fans like this... its so hard to imagine someone saying this as justification for this very tragic trade... JT Miller & Lu Eriksson 11 million? these guys CAP well eh?! ffs!!!

Muzzin is a much better player then JT Miller, and he plays defence. borderline 2nd line/3rd line players shouldnt net first round picks.

Also, I tend to value D-men a lot more than wingers (then again, Syracuse is a two-way forward factory...so...).

Miller...agh... he's frustrating. Has all the tools, but just seems to have a consistently sore motivator cuff (lulz). He'll go on stretches where he looks like a bonafide top line power forward. He hits, he checks, he scores, he sets up beautiful plays....

.... the he starts breaking up his own plays... then he goes invisible for 10 games...

Maybe it'll be different playing for Green and with a constant top 6 scoring role.

But man, I can't believe JBB got us a 1st for Miller.

Again what is with all the outrage, geesh. I think Horvat is a Heart And Soul player and likely the captain this year. All I said was that their production is similar. TB who have been pretty successful traded a first to get JT Miller as well, just sayin...

Good for both teams. Not a big deal. The 1st is conditional so all good. Minor.

McDonagh was the key here, really. The 1st, Howden and Hajek(sp)

Miller was essentially swapped from Namestnikov

You don't seem to understand the condition, it's a first in 2020 unless it's a lottery pick. In that case it becomes a 2021 1st which has no protection.
