So if this the mindset, why did they bring Hayes in?

As opposed to the Cup contending Devils who just acquired him? How does he fit in NJ?

i think some gloss over the idea that the D core from last year wasn't having success, they needed a change, a push forward. Something more than Gudas and AMAC.
- wcorvette

I personally thought that the Niskanen trade was enough.

Hayes killed penalties, but he wasn't particularly that great at it.

G is actually a much better PK'er if you look at shot suppression #'s.

- Tomahawk

Yep. third periods of close games, pk's it's going to be a Giroux/Couturier tandem on the ice. Hayes can at least lighten the load somewhat.

I can't watch a passive PK again this year. Watching them sit back and allowing the opposition to move the puck at will without any pressure is sickening.

Hayes is for 7 years, the window will open.

NJ, needs to put fans in the seats, without winning the lottery twice I am not sure there would be a NJ franchise.

Hughes and PK, help fill the seats and probably help Hall stay

- wcorvette

Those are all true but they had the cap to add a great Dman and did, so did we... We chose other options.

not talking about Hayes. That is a different topic. Hayes also only 27.

Cant speak for nj just giving you my opinion on Subban. Does Subban make the flyers a cup contender?

no he doesnt. one is clearly much better in is own zone.
- daryl stanley

Not at all.

Subban was ranked way ahead of Niskanen in terms of suppressing shots AND ahead of him in expected goals against.

Subban is a good player, and they got him for zero cost with the exception of taking back his contract.

NJ has a tiny fan base, the way they put fans in the seats is to win. Adding Subban helps them become a better team. As he would have helped the Flyers be a better team.

I could have been ok there, Braun is an overpay, an odd overpay but from what I read if he plays to his potential I think he will fit into the 6 really well and help the kids grow. If not, OUCCHHHHH

said it last year, the team didnt fit together, I give Fletch credit for trying to find the right pieces.

I'm a huge fan of the fact that he's said "righted the ship in the right direction" two days in a row not realizing that they mean the same thing.

So season ticket holders are going to wait till they WIN, before they go to games?

Well in the Jones trade they needed a #1 center. I'd rather have Jones but at least you can see that deal.
- MJL

All joking aside, the upcoming Josi extension was probably the biggest factor.

i dont agree. Niskannen is better in his own end.

Also ever occur to you they dont want him around their young players? his 3rd team in years. His former coach also here might have some insight to that as well. Me i have no problem if they did acquire him. I just prefer the route they took with the other 2 as think it will work out much better. Makes it much more balanced and less pressure

Depends if your a Hayes fan.
He could be a very solid guy for them.
7 yrs is risky though. I think Vigneau had a lot of influence on this decision, hopefully he’s right.

- Marc D

lol, looking at the Flyers track record, Vigneault knows he won't be here in 7 years.

Gordie Howie circa 1952 doesn't make them a Cup contender.

I think you always have to weigh the cost and what you get out of it. In my opinion Hextall would weigh those factors and he'd rather pass if the cost was too high and risk that a young player can step up. I'd much rather be on the losing side of that then giving up what they gave up to get Braun. They gave up a 2nd and a 3rd round pick as well as having to take 1.9M of dead cap space in 20/21 to add Braun. Really for what? So they can be a playoff team this year, maybe win a round?

9 million no retention is a tough pill to swallow, specifically when the Flyers need was a center.

Love PK but not sold on him being a good leader
