He’s very good & only wants to get paid. Not his problem Dubas set precedences. Trade him if cannot afford him. Dubas rolled the dice & created the cap situation without the foresight of seeing it would lead to this.

you mean, trade Willy Nylander + Kadri if cap will be a problem.

Willie holds out, plays a horrible season and 2nd time horrible playoffs, and somehow he gets rewarded since 'trade value too low'.

Seems quite obvious that best chance to win a stanley cup is to keep your elite talent.
Matthews-Tavares-Marner-Rielly are the only 4 that meet that criterion.
Work with the others - in particular those on contracts over 3mln AAV - to make cap work + upgrade on D.

by the way - for those that say that only Dreger talked about a below 10mln contract for marner before start of the season; McKenzie with a very realistic talk about Marner situation and on how waiting another season would potentially impact Marner's AAV: https://youtu.be/YFhY9VSs6Uo

I see his son is doing quite well as an OHL GM.

by the way - for all those who feel I'm being unfair to Dubas and criticize him without any reason ("just because of his age") - I actually think Dubas would make a better President than GM. He is very eloquent, seems like a bright guy and thinks long term.
However I also think he wants to be 'too close' to the players and therefor is not willing/able to take some necessary hard decisions.

I don't dislike Dubas that much (don't think he's the best hockey mind either) as people believe - I just think he is not a perfect fit for a GM position.

Leaf nation waiting with breath held to see how much damage the marner signing does to the Cap.
Several big deals still need to be made, and until Marner signed hard to do all the other things that need to get done.

So far the leafs have the same team that wasn't enough to get past round 1....but, minus next years 1st, minus marleau, and minus gardiner. And even though we all know Gardiner is a whipping boy and won't be missed.....whoever they call up on an entry level contract to replace him will have people calling for a Gardiner return.

Nope, gonna be quiet here a while.

Cap Hell sux, as a Hawk fan I know first hand. And with 40+ million tied up in just 4 players...Leaf Cap Helll will be with them for the next few years.

No.

This isn't about being able to afford him. He's asking for ridiculously more than he's worth. His comps are making 9.5 over 8 years. He wants to be paid more than Matthews even though he's not worth that.

Nice trade by Benning. $5.25 Million a year for four more years. He was good for 13 goals on a great offensive team, he should be good enough for at least 8 for the Nucks. Only cost you a lottery pick plus.

please explain that.....

Marner - 241gp, 224p, career high 94pt season (0.93ppg)

Matthews - 212gp, 205p, career high 73pt season (0.96ppg)

how exactly is he "not worth" the same as Matthews. Also, their advanced stats are very similar, which is telling considering Matthews played sheltered minutes, and Marner didn't.

I'm not saying Marner is better, but it's incredibly naïve to think he isn't worth pretty close to the same as Matthews.

also, you also talk about marner's comps making like 9.5......well matthew's comps are making about the same. I know people like to compare matthew's to guys like mcdavid, crosby, etc....but the fact is, he's not there yet. he's in a group with guys like barkov, schiefle, draisaitl, etc....who are all making INSANELY less than him. like someone else said, Dubas set the precedent here by spending insane amounts of money on Tavares and Matthews, and now people expect Marner to "take one for the team" when clearly nobody else was willing to do it.

why....do you want to see how many players have better numbers than matthew's, despite being paid significantly less?

you guys are all pissy at people for pointing out the cap mismanagement on your team....when in reality you should be pissed at Dubas for putting your team there in the first place.
