I can’t help looking ahead. Gotta plan. However, I certainly am waiting to see how everything fits together and the on ice results before being too critical. Personally, I think the upgrades will be a more significant improvement than most seem to think.

Agreed. It goes fast. I guess I just feel that cap not spent is money left on the table. After the season is over it doesn't do you any good at all. It's gone. I'm not saying throw out the future to be at the top of the cap every year, or give huge contracts to players you don't feel are core players. But it's not a dirty thing to be near the cap either.
- FlyersGrace

I hear what you're saying but that's not necessarily true. Cap commitments you didn't make for this season means that you'll have more cap space to use in future years.

obviously making them a cup contender overnight is almost impossible. Holmgren was able to do more his first off season because he had more flexibility. However, you can't just tie up a lot of cap space for the sake of bringing people in if it affects the cap long term. I'm not angry, upset, blah blah with the moves. the term i used is leery.
- nastyflyergirl

Not picking on you NFG... But, what is a "contender". I have seen that term be thrown around a lot lately. You could say St Louis did make a contender overnight (basement of the league to winning the cup), or the year before with the LV Knights (going to the cup their first year). Looking at the team on paper... I would never have guessed that St. Louis would have won the Cup this year. They were not a contender, IMHO. And, many "contenders" dropped out early. My point is that winning the cup is equal parts team and luck.

As for next year, who knows how the season will shake out. The Flyers have a very good team on paper, as many other teams. As far as how a team progresses, team chemistry has a lot to do with it as well as injuries.

The cap space is there to use, an asset. However, a GM needs to manage the space. We'll see how Fletch does.

Yep. So far so good.

Maybe off another tangent...but the idea that the Flyers are going “all in” to win the cup within 2 years has been out there on Twitter. Here is the thing...of course we are. I wanted do everything plausible to do that while maintaining an open window with our young group being 2 years older and playoff warriors. I just hate the premise implied that our window will close in 2 years. Heck some people here don’t even think the window will open until then.

To each his or her own..

Im not sure what their is not to be impressed about or even angry about...

Keeping in mind that it is only June 24 and the roster is not going to look this way when Camp starts in 2.5 months

1. On paper they are better then last year.
2. They have a legit 2C allowing Patrick to slide down to 3C giving him a chance to develop
3. Both d the signed are on short contracts.
4. 47 , good soldier though he was, is gone
5. Solid draft
6. No youth traded , to this point.

My biggest issues right now

1. Soft team somehow got softer
2. Provy is smoking funny stuff if he truly thinks he deserves Ekblad money
3. No backup goalie

You definitely need some good fortune, you need to be playing well, get good goaltending and stay as healthy as possible but I don't agree that winning the cup is equal parts team and luck. Sure things can work out for one year like it did for the Blues or the Canes years back but that is not likely sustainable. Teams like TB despite getting knocked out in the first round can take multiple shots at it over a period of years. That's the team you really want to be rather than an average team that is hoping for things to break your way.

On a good note. If we continue to give FA's amazing contracts we'll be seen as a good destination city. If we want you - we'll pay you well for it. I got the feeling that under Hextall we began losing more and more interest from players - not just because the team wasn't wining but that the culture had changed so drastically that people had begun putting us on their NTL.
It will take Fletcher some time to get that rep turned around.

We probably lost a lot of FAs due to the no chicken wing policy under Hextall.

No doubt. Now that players can eat pizza and hoagies for post game meals, players will be flocking to the Flyers.

Exactly.

And there will always be moves to make.

I would have never thought Tampa could have moved Miller for a 1st rounder and a 3rd. The Canucks basically helped a cap strapped team and paid to do it.

- J35Bacher

Miller is 26 and had 47 points in 76 games. Vancouver are trying to get better.

Totally understand Provy position

He played on ELC contract 246 games and last season only 3 ( Three ) players are above him with TOI in entire NHL

The Jackets, man what a mess, I can see them signing as many FA's as possible, probably offer the farm to Lee out of NY. I can't see how they don't drop significantly this coming season.

taking out the top FA's here are some more

Wayne Simmonds, Corey Perry, Micheal Ferland, Semyon Varlamov, Joe Thornton, Brian Boyle, Jason Pominville, Joonas Donskoi, Jason Spezza, Marcus Johansson, Valtteri Filppula, Derick Brassard, Justin Williams, Ron Hainsey, Patrick Maroon, Cam Talbot, Mike Smith, Marc Methot, Deryk Engelland, Thomas Vanek, Niklas Kronwall, Brett Connolly, Dion Phaneuf, Alex Chiasson, Andrew MacDonald, Colin Wilson, Ben Lovejoy

Who knows anything about Pitlick? Just traded Hartman for him. Assuming cap dump. 4th line winger.

So Pitlick is way worse than Hartman, older, and somehow we didnt get a pick out of it as well?

I feel like Hartman could have at least fetched a 2nd or 3rd rounder considering he was traded for a first rounder only 2 years ago

Edit: Okay maybe not way worse but a still a pick shouldve been thrown in

31st overall pick (2nd round in 2010). Although to be fair Hartman was the 30th pick. I have no opinion about this trade. I just don't understand it.

Not a scorer. Not sure how his skating/speed is. Decent size but not sure how aggressive or defensively aware. This Flyers team is trending American.
