The great thing is that, similar to Hughes and Kakko matching up against each other in the division.....Dach and Byram will be facing each other 5x a year.
With the Avs being my "new home team"....I'm excited to see a defense core of Byram, Makar, Girard, Zadorov, Johnson, Barrie next year. If the Avs somehow grab Panarin....they will be one of the must watch teams in the league with Mackinnon, Rantanen, Panarin - EnzoD
They will be a force for sure. Can't help but think it will be short lived though, that sounds like cap hell waiting to happen |

Trying to figure out the rational for the trade, I guess Hartman is a RFA that looks like the Flyers didn't want to tender an offer and Pitlick has one year left at $1 million - LAHawk
Possibly and they may have someone who is comparable to him and cheaper in their system. He seemed to be a good guy and teammate. I mean I never read anything about him being difficult to deal with. |

Sometimes you are just good enough to get traded, but not good enough to hang on to a full time position. |

Mackinnon is signed at ONLY $6.3 mil through 2023 which gives them the spare cash to pay Panarin, even after Rantanen gets his big contract this summer. Plus Barrie is probably going to get traded or walk next summer so they save his $5.5mil and have most of their defense core on an ELC or cheap contract |

Mackinnon at 6.3 for that long is quite the deal.

Too many keystrokes wasted on Hartman.

Capfriendly is probably the most well known and has a pretty detailed section on the topic. |

Great article at The Athletic by Dom Luszczyszyn for those with a subscription. Takes a look at UFA's, has plenty of fancies, projections both on the ice and what contract can be expected both money and term. A guy I thought all along that would fit and after reading this I like Donskoi 25 times more. No mention of his speed but the 6ft 190lb 27 yr old can motor. Never averaged more than 15:00 a game with SJ and very little to no PP time.
Projected Contract: $2.8M x 3 years
Joonas Donskoi never gets much love, but he’s been a strong under-the-radar player for the Sharks over the last two seasons, doing well in a bottom-six role. Few players drive play better than Donskoi does who is excellent at creating chances for himself and his teammates, as well as moving the puck up ice. The Sharks had a 58.2 percent expected goals rate with Donskoi on the ice last season as a result, the highest on the team and 4.4 percent better than when he was on the bench. For one of the best teams in the league in that regard, that’s seriously impressive. He’s a positive at both ends of the ice too.
Part of what also makes Donskoi so underrated is his massive ability to draw penalties while not taking many himself. Only 14 other players are projected to do a better job on a per minute basis next season and that could be a valuable asset to a team with strong special teams.
Donskoi may not score much but could be very useful for a team needing middle-six depth that struggles to possess the puck and create chances. At under $3 million, he would be a steal. |

He wants to win a Cup. I could see him taking a HUGE discount to play for Tampa and chase that elusive championship. I think he sees the writing on the wall that San Jose just isn't gunna be able to get it done in May |

It's cause MacKinnon signed one of the $6mx6 (give or take $1m or 1 year) deals that are common for players of his production level. They end up looking really good for most of the players and bad for just a few.
MacKinnon had a .7 PPG during his ELC years, so in comparison to the Hawks young highly productive guys - Debrincat is at .79 PPG currently while Strome is at .63 PPG. They both need to play another season and Strome will likely be 30-35 games off from the other two, but if they both come in around that level that's the deal they'll both be looking for next summer. |

IMO, the Hawks are stacked with middle 6 wingers...Saad, Perlini, Kubalik, Caggiulla, Sikura. Who is the Donskoi equivalent on Defense??

And no state taxes, as opposed to the 13.5% he pays in California.

Donskoi was one of the players I mentioned I'd target - he's a really solid middle 6 forward that plays responsibly. |

And I'll add one more for those who read and put stock in posters who have 1 or 2 word scouting reports on every player that plays the sport on every continent on earth who say "hard pass" cuz they were at the arena watching these guys live.
Projected Contract: $4.8M x 4 years
Richard Panik gets a bit of a bad rep in hockey circles for his lack of consistency, which is likely part of the reason he was shipped out of Chicago two seasons ago. There are worse options than him in this free agency class though. Panik looks like an average player, who fits fine in a team’s middle six.
What you’ll likely get is around 35-to-45 points with some penalty differential issues, but the reason to be enamored with Panik has more to do with his play-driving ability where he’s very strong offensively and can hold his own defensively. Over the last couple seasons, Panik’s teams carry a 52.6 percent expected goals percentage with him on the ice, but that drops to 49 percent with him off. That difference is 66th best mark in the league among forwards over the time frame. His 1.79 points-per-60 rate at 5-on-5 is also solid – and much of that was on a talent-depleted Arizona team.
He’s not a sexy name, but he can help a team at the right price and term. That’s not Evolving Hockey’s projected $4.9-million per season over four years, but a little less could be workable.
