Jimmy Greenfield believes more trades are coming for the Blackhawks. Earlier this month, they shipped forward Dominik Kahun to Pittsburgh for defenseman Olli Maatta. He also expects the Hawks could pursue second-tier UFA forwards like Brett Connolly, Mats Zuccarello, and Micheal Ferland.

I just think you can look at Toronto as a team without a plan. Signing Tavares almost led to them losing Nylander. Probably will lead to them losing Marner unless Dubias (spell) can find somebody to take meathead Kadri , who may be 1 of the dumbest hockey players in the league, and probably Zaitsev.

They will be ALL offense, and they will lose again early in April....and I can't wait.. I don't see much of it here, but at some point the media has to destroy this current leaf's management for horrible cap management.....

Furthermore, look at the coaching staff and players who can't win a series and year by year, their window is starting to close as they have to sign their stars to HUGE Deals and not be able to address their other weaknesses.

Dale Talon looks like a PHD in cap understanding vs what Toronto has going on.....

- SteveRain

The real mistake was capitulating to Nylander and giving him $7 mil. Dubas is now looking to dump that contract, but nobody wants him at that price, especially after the poopty season he had when he came back.

If the Hawks are talking to Vegas I think 2 things.

1) Hawks possibly take on one or more expiring contracts.

Eakins, Reaves, Haula, Merrill or Holden

2) Hawks likely interested in LW Nikita Gusev (There were reports of teams asking about him from Vegas)

3) If Gus is going to get traded (big if) then it could be here and move parts could be moving, as the Hawks will expect a bit of a return on a bargain contract to help Vegas out.

4) If the Hawks are taking Clarkson's money for next year, they would only do it for a pretty good sweetener IMO. Like Gusev, or a top prospect. Could be a real interesting deal if they make it.

- breadbag

I strongly believe that future improvement comes from prospects coming and establishing themselves. Next season is no sure thing we will be in the lottery or if we are....there is no guarantee to select frim the first tier of prospects.

Obtaining another first round choice in a trade involving Clarkson is not a great sweetener. That would be a mid to late furst round pick. Even trading our own and the acauired pick just to move up into tier one of prospects, is no sure trade another team wants to do.

I believe that Gus has it in him to have a very good season. Either next trade deadline or leading up to 2020 draft you may determine to trade Keith and or Gus. Both Seabrook and Keith may not approve of a trade -, you may be stuck with Seabrook and Keith is a duffucult player to ascertain when to trade. Eventually the top yoing dmen are going to force other dmen out of a job

I don't know what it takes to obtain another tier one #1

Kapanen and Johnsson are already signed per MacKenzie for around 3.5 for 3-4 years.
- SteveRain

Go after San Jose then,

Timo for $6
Lablanc for $3.5

If I remember correctly Dougie offersheeted Hammer way back when.

Connolly is a VERY underrated and underappreciated 3rd line scoring winger. Former 1st round pick that was a Key Depth Scorer for the Caps in their Cup win. Great speed, shoot first player, 6'2" and former 6th overall pick. Connnolly is still only 27 so he would be a great addition..46 points last year and can play up and down the lineup.

Zuccarello is a warrior, but he was injured A LOT last year and is 31 years old at 5'7...his best production is in the rearview mirror IMO pass on Zucs.

Do you think he's worth 11 AAV
- SteveRain

Do I think he's worth every penny that Matthews is?
Yes.

Do I think either of them are worth over 10M AAV?

That’s the one piece we don’t get to see from a fans perspective. The players overall commitment to the game and intelligence. Dach sounds a lot like Toews.
- DarthKane

Sounds like Mark Scheifele. I remember when the Jets took him 7th overall and people thought it was a big reach.

But did the Hawks really need Campbell or Hossa?

The screw up for TOR was paying Matthew's, Nylander and soon to be Marner the huge deals prior to winning anything. Had that group signed 2-3yr bridge deals, it would have allowed them wiggle room for depth players and time to grow as a group and possibly win 1 championship - which what would that do in a city like TOR?

Instead, they paid out the RFA's they didnt HAVE to, before they won anything

So all those wanting to pay ADB and/or Stome based on the TOR model....that's exactly what you are signing up for.

Thanks and Nyquist you think wouldn't cost a ton.....

Again, what are they giving up to acquire DeHaan or Faulk? That's where my concern lies....

Could have signed de Haan last off-season as a FA, but Stan decided to go in a different direction. Not one of his shining moments, although he's done better since.

There was absolutely no reason for Toronto to add more offense last off-season, especially when their defense was flawed, at best.

Still not sure how another d-man is added. Let’s assume de Haan is the target, who becomes the odd man out? I don’t think Colliton wants Gus moved, and I don’t think the team gives up on Joker just yet. Murphy doesn’t seem like he’d be moved considering the fact that the team wants to get better in their own zone and he has a pretty solid contract for what he offers.

I think two higher-end forwards makes some sense, but ultimately would require moving a couple of the younger kids that are still fighting for spots (Caggiula, Perlini, Sikura, etc.)

Gonna be interesting to see what transpires.

But I will say, Pavelski makes so much sense for the Hawks that it hurts.

Almost too good to be true. If San Jose is truly unable to find a way to come to terms with him, he should be priority A for Stan.

The kind of injection to the team the Hawks desperately need.

100% guessing here... Gus probably goes back the other way IMO if they make a move for one of the two defensemen.

Read where Joe is looking for term. Don't know exactly what that means, but I'm assuming at least three years. I'm fine with 2 years, but beyond that who knows what he has left in the tank.

Would much rather give Joe 3 years than give Lee, Nyquist, Zucc, etc. 5+ year terms.

That’s also not how Stan operates, so I foresee either short term (3-year) type deals on the horizon, or acquiring players who are still under contract for a little while. Seems like all the players Stan has acquired in recent years (except for deadline moves) have all hadn’t players under contract for a little while longer.

I think Stan has learned his lesson about being hamstrung by lengthy deals.

2 of the whole list or 2 from FA?

I would get Pavelski for sure if available

Once McDavid and Eichel signed for the big bucks off their ELCs, the die was cast for Matthews, Nylander, and Marner. One could argue Nylander should have been moved for defense when he held out, but that ship has sailed for the Leafs. The bridge deal for high end talent seems to have gone the way of the dodo.

To me this could a situation a Columbus took dubios and Edmonton took jesse and Jesse was getting all the love and analysis were questioning Columbus's pick.

I love this post. When Jarmo (a Finn) in Columbus took the French Canadian kid over the Finn a few years ago I had to think there was an issue with Jesse Pullwhateverhisnameis. Sure looks like he was right. Jarmo's got balls. Wish the BJ's could have gotten to the finals for him.
