Legitimately I cannot think of a single moment where Benning played hardball and won; he rarely leverages his organizational strengths against other teams so I just cant see him starting today

I would guess Boeser will get $8+ from Benning. Boeser's camp knows Pettersson will get in the $11-12 range from them, so they will keep the gap closer

I wish Benning would wait and see what we really have in Hughes before signing someone questionable for long term.
- A_SteamingLombardi

I am not a fan of long term Myers. I do see Benning wanting more points from the back end.

I think a long term Myers contract could easily present problems in years 5 , 6 , and 7 but that is far down the road so I am not going to lose sleep over it. Who knows what the cap will be in 5 years ?

He held Elder to 2 years but Benning was holding all the cards there.

It has to be hard to resist sacrificing the future to try and become a playoff team now. All I know is that this was Benning's 6th draft, it's time to start seeing some D get some NHL playing time (aside from Hughes).
- golfingsince

A rebuilding team doesn't trade first rounders. A bubble team doesn't trade first rounders.
Jim Benning trades 1st round picks because he knows the canucks are a playoff team about to turn into a contender.
Jim Benning has the balls you lack. Trade the future to build the present. This team is better than last year and way better than 2 years ago.
Plus next year's draft is weak. I'm glad Benning acknowledged that!
He should stay the course and keep trading/signing to make the best possible team next year.

In Benning we trust. #benningisagenius

I'm not sure what he has ever had as an organizational strength.

Hopefully Hughes is capable of putting up 60 pts.

Certainly sounds right now like the #Canucks are leaning towards not qualifying D Ben Hutton. Vancouver could be worried about losing the arbitration case, Hutton is 2nd in minutes played for D. Walk away number for Canucks is 4.4 in arb but Hutton could get 4.2 or 4.3.

John Shannon on with Walker and Rintoul: The Edler number came in, when Boesers number comes that will help with a Myers number, but they had what I was told was a very good meeting last night in Vancouver… I don’t think the money is a question, I think it’s the term

It's interesting that literally, every blueliner with a pulse is over-valued on the trade and free-agent market.

..except Ben Hutton.

If Hughes is playing with Myers I wonder what it will mean point wise for both? I do like Myers shot. He just has to remain reliable .

Truthfully I would much rather watch Myers Hughs over Hughes and Stecher.

1 player 17.8m cap space

It’s deceiving with some players not staying & Boeser to sign &/or players traded out or walk. It’s clear as mud for awhile yet.

JB is up against it trading out players. That’s his biggest problem he faces. Juggling the cap & how he builds a PO team is dicey indeed.

Sautner Briesbois and Biega are all part of the cap hit . They will be sent down saving 2.3. Spooner will either be sent down or bought out so another mil saved. Eriksson?

Fixing the D:

I don't know if this is what they think but Canucks do have a bit good thing IMO.

I won't get into whether I think Myers long term is good or bad because I haven't seen his new contract.

Edler is a reliable 2 year deal that should bring 30 points.

Tanev is playing his last year here and hopefully he can improve his trade value.

Hutton MDZ Pouliot are all gone thank Christ.

Brisebois and Sautner can easily replace Hutton or hold the fort until Juolevi is ready. I believe he will be ready later this year but be ready for a Ristolainen type guy. Put up points but there will be lots of Mistakes.

Woo will be ready within two years and he will be solid.

Tryamkin looks like he is gearing up to return after April

Rathbone everyone knows the story on him so why repeat it.

Canucks did sign three very good NCAA free agents and I think one will be NHL talent if not two.

I am not agreeing or disagreeing with Benning but I think this whomever they sign should be the last of the long term Free Agents signing he will do. I think if it is Nyquist and Myers he will have the team he finally wants.

Edit : He may go after Barrie next year also seeing he is part of his bucket list.

Judd did mention they signed many NCAA types & why no D therefore were drafted. You will be correct that it’s time for other D to slot in.

That would be the prudent thing to do but clearly they are going all in to be a competitive playoff team this year.
Free agency should confirm our worst fears.

There is no question in what we have in Hughes. It’s more about designing D pairings & who he supplies to TG to take it over.

JB has done well on contracts to date. I don’t see that changing. Hard ball can come in a few forms. Patience & watch the market play out for starters. His cap is a weapon & GM’s can call him after he puts out some feelers. Time is on his side.

If Myers puts up 30-40 points and Hughes puts up 50-60 is that a problem?
