The Avs were in a position to get 100% and then some out of Duchene's trade value. He was signed another year and was in his prime on a fair deal. I dont think anyone expected the Senators to fall off a bridge in the way they have to get Colorado the #4 pick this year.
The Penguins would not get close to 100% in a deal for any of their top players, specifically Letang & Kessel. - SuperHenderson13
The issue with sammy's idea hypothesis is not that the Pens couldn't get value like that. The issue is by the time those assets come for fruition, Sid's window will be closed. |

poor penguins...no one had an issue w/these salaries a few years back...can you say 'rebuild'? |

After the draft the trade is now complete. At the time I never knew how complex that deal actually was. Regardless everyone here gets defensive over big name players being moved and its always "you always lost that trade" No you dont.
The Pens issue is Lelang is their best Dman, AVS still had Mac on the roster to replace Duchene.
Malkin is old and hurt a lot, so I dont think his value is really there on the market.
Kessel is the most likely candidate but again he's over 30 at this point but has a good cap hit and good production.
Either way, moving Maata/Rust/Hornquest/JJ/Gubs/Bjud is not going to make the team much better at this point. What they bring back will either be cap relief or another equal value roster player and the Pens are back where they started. |

Why would NYR trade Shatt and retain salary for JJ? - sammy87
Retaining $1.65MM plus the JJ buyout would be a lower cap hit, plus I’m assuming we would have to add someone of value. Maybe it’s ZAR, maybe it’s Rust idk but it seems more palatable to them to get something rather than nothing |

I didn't realize that the roster for next season had to be done by now. |

So move a depth forward and JJ for Shattenkirk with some money retained, the filthy rich NYR then buyout JJ, then they’re free to play their young defenders (and Trouba) and they add yet another young forward to their collection while they continue to convince Panarin to come on board. Just seems like good asset management to me: turning something you don’t value into something that you do |

Let’s say NYR don’t retain any money: I would still be fine shipping out a depth forward and JJ for Shats and then send Schultz out for a top 6 winger (hopefully) |

Note: Rutherford was in the Shattenkirk bidding war in what, 2017? Washington got him instead and we still won lol. Anyways, we know how he likes to circle back to players |

What happens if they send JJ to WB and he refuses to report? Doesn't that basically null and void his contract?

I do believe we then could choose to end his contract due to breach of contract... we STILL get a cap hit but its less than a buyout.
But I am basing this off of the Mike Richards fiasco out in LA, as I think thats how it went done money wise. |

I dont know how it works but I know JJ will take all the money he can get....if he pulled something like this and then a team signed him for $1M, I imagine he would do it to get the extra $1M. dude was completely bankrupt... |

Reminds me of Wade Redden in NY. He used to be a pretty good D-man and then fell off a cliff |

Very good point
Guile: wasn’t there substance abuse with Richards? I thought that was the primary factor there. The guy from Buffalo in the ROR trade is a better example IMO. He quit showing up (mental health issues) and they mutually terminated his contract. I could be wrong but I didn’t think there was any cap penalty there |

That wasn't the point. The point was to be realistic about their situation. |

Patrick Berglund! Came to me while I was meal prepping. Pretty sure that’s the guy who came over in the ROR trade, went, and then stopped showing up I think |

I referenced an article not too long ago, Sportsnet maybe? He was interviewed and said he had lost his passion for the game and was getting to the point where he didn’t want to do anything and he knew something had to change. He knew he left a lot of money on the table (like $10MM or something) but it wasn’t about the money anymore. He said he’s doing well and is working out and getting ready to play again |

I'm not reading all of the comments. But, entering the year with the same group of players is not a bad thing in my book. I don't see a lack of talent at all. I see a lack of chemistry and maybe NOT doing anything is good for once. |

Yeah. He said that he had talked to some NHL teams and thinks that windows still open...or, just staying in (I forget which country lol) and playing there. |

He’s Swedish. The Swedes are all well connected and there’s a big hockey fraternity. They support eachother a lot. Maybe he plays SEL and stays close to family for a year, or maybe KHL or NHL. Definitely lots of game left in the guy |

Those that think any team that trades away the best player always loses.....look at how the Duchene trade worked out for the AVS. - sammy87
So because it worked that one time we should ignore the other 99 times where it didn’t? |
