The actual statement was that the price to acquire O'Reilly went up if the Sabres paid the bonus.

The Blues didn't want to pay the higher acquisition cost, so they paid the bonus instead.

It's a subtle but important distinction

Okay, but we still control their rights until they are 27 when they are signed.

As I said, it might help cost control them, since we dont need to sign them as quickly but see mittelstadt and poor management.

Not all, but almost all players of any value sign before they lose their rights. I can think of more Euro and NCAA players becoming UFAs than CHL players.

Most of those NCAA and Euros developed better than the older CHL players that weren't signed. It's why you see an influx of undrafted college and European players entering the league, some players are late bloomers

From what I heard it was “if your gonna trade him, do it now before I shell out the bonus”. Botts could of just said no, I’m not trading him. OR should of traded him the previous year when he wasn’t up against a deadline. A lot of GMs have to deal with owners, Darcy had to deal with an internal cap etc... it’s part of the gig. To give botts carte Blanche on a bad trade is rediculous

I think Robert Thomas will be a fantastic player in the NHL. The Blues got terrific value. I think long term Mittelstadt will be the better player and will justify the selection at 8. I’m not worried about his production after year one. If Mittelstadt repeats the season he just had then I’ll be worried.
