Just clarifying ..second buyout window wasn't available for Marleau. It's limited to lower AAV's. It was now or never for Dubas. But ya the fact that Carolina has to buy the whole thing out would impact the price the Leafs had to pay.

Hearing the Maple Leafs are looking at Chicago Wolves coach Rocky Thompson to join Babcock’s staff. Thompson is under contract with Vegas as AHL coach. Will be interesting if Vegas will release him from contract.

Leafs now have $14M in cap space (plus they can also put Hortons contract on LTIR + they can go 10% over the cap until end of Sept) to sign their RFAs. Marner signing an offersheet over $10.25 signals he doesn’t want to play for the Leafs anymore. Leafs should take the compensation and sign Panarin and use the draft picks from Marners exit to get a Dman

he was open to sign a contract before start of last season.
dubas wasn't interested in a 8-9mln AAV contract long term deal then.
dubas dropped the ball.

Looking back it would have been great but if Dubas signed Marner to a 9 million dollar deal after a 69 point season, I’m sure he would have took some serious heat.

Sounds like they want him to get offer sheeted, but now that Marleau is gone they have over 20 mill in cap space.
